Need reccomendations for a hitch mounted bike rack.

Rack must fit in 2 inch hitch and fold down to allow access to storage on my Coachman Freedom. Need to carry two balloon tire bikes. Not expensive racing bikes

Looking for stability, strength and reasonable cost. Must be able to lock into hitch and secure bikes.

Thanks

Nick

I can recommend a Thule 990 double track 2 bike hitch mount rack. I have one it is very strong, you can get them for 2" hitch or 1 1/2" hitch receiver. Price varies, I bought mine last year at the Hershey RV show at a special deal $220.00. Look on the Internet.

We have this Swagman rack and have used it now for 4 years, and is holding up well. It works great and is very sturdy. Not only does it fold down, but you can still tow something while using the rack. It slips over the tow bar. We now use it when we tow our Toyota Matrix behind the MH.

AT $119.95, it's only about $15 more now than when I bought mine 4 yrs ago at Proline.

They also have ones that simply slide into the receiver. Check out the website for more racks.

I too have a Swagman 3 bike rack. My rack is a 2" hitch mount that also can swing down to give access to open a tailgate, trunk or storage compartment. www.swagmanbikeracks.com

We have a bike rack from Dick's Sporting Goods.

- fits into a class-1 or class-2 hitch. I use it with our class-2 hitch on our car as designed, and use an adaptor for our class-3 hitch on the RV.
- holds 1 to 4 bikes
- lift a pin and the bike rack pivots away from the vehicle to access a trunk, rear hatch, or in your case, an RV storage compartment.

Click Here to see a bunch to choose from. I see a few require the class-3 hitch which is great as long as you won't ever use it on a different vehicle with a smaller hitch.

Here is one example of a hitch adapter. Using it moves the bikes farther from the RV so handle bars and tires don't hit the RV.

Thules are top rated. Don't make the mistake I did with my first bike rack, buying one with a 11/2" that you use a spacer with, buy one that has a 2" post, way more stable.

Make sure you read the fine print. I ordered one and when I looked at manual, it basically said, not for RV use. The problem is the way it whips around back there. I would find out from the company before I purchased one.

Hmmm, next time we are on the road with bikes in back, I'll have to get my wife to take a good look out the back window to see what's going on back there. Interesting point you make.

We used this Thule rack on the back of our Winnebago Minnie. It swings out of the way so you can open up the compartment behind it. The only negative was the height of the bikes; made it hard to get them up and down. We moved the rack to the back of our toad which works a lot better.

Our Swagman 3 bike rack worked ok with cruiser bikes with curved top frames but but they hang off level. Brackets are really intended for mountain bikes, etc. with horizontal top frame members. The sell bolt on frame members for girls bikes with step through frames so that they can be carried on these kinds of racks.
