I would use a Battery Tender instead.

Our converter is too aggressive to leave unattended for 5 months - I agree with the battery tender

If your Southwind has a Power Dynamics 9200 series converter you have a smart charger already. If it has the 9100 series check to see if the Charge Wizard was installed. That makes it a smart charger. If not get one at http://www.bestconverter.com around $25.00. And your Battery Control Center should keep your chassis battery up as well. Ot boosts at 14.2v until the bats are at 90%, finishes the charge at 13.6v thrn floats at 13.2v. Every 2o hours it desulphates at 14.2v for 15 minutes then goes back to 13.2v.

It depends on your converter. If it is a Parallax/Magnatek, then ABSOLUTELY NOT! If it is one of the 3 stage converters, it would be OK.

I keep mine plugged in and have it on a timer so it comes on for an hour or so each day. do not use a fancy new digital timer however.

Ditto. But I do use a digital timer because the load is pretty small. Only the battery charger and a night light so I can see when it is on (parked beside the house). The digital timer has an internal battery so that the timer stays on schedule... even when the power is off for any length of time. I will be leaving mine for over 3 months when snowbirding this winter. I intend to do the same with my Florida trailer (for 9 months!) next year... but I will just put the battery on a small trickle charger, after disconnecting it from the trailer charger, and I will put the timer on for only a couple of hours once per week.
