Here are some more things I don't like about how the news is presented.
1. If there is bad weather, don't send the reporters there period. And then of course have the anchor say "oh be careful there we want you back". What idiots.
2. You don't have to stand in front of a building/home/car etc to report the news about that place. Also don't show a reporter knocking on someone's (which of course won't be answered) and report that as news. These are almost the same as 1 but less dangerous but still idiotic.
3. In a town with 6 news stations, not everyone has to send a film team to report on the news. Hasn't anyone heard of sharing the news?
4. A local station doesn't have to show national news which will be on in 15 or 20 minutes anyway (or was on 10 or 15 minutes ago) unless it really pertains to something local. And the feed they put on is from the national news anyway.
5. Whatever happened to investigative reporting with meat in it?
6. Don't load up on sweeps week with your best stuff. Try doing it all year long.

I really enjoyed NMI (News World International) when they were on cable. They gave tv news without American liberal/conservitive bias. Gave me better input from a international perspective insead of the normal Fox/CNN/MSN/etc slant.

NWI also gave each countries own local news which we never saw on our current news programs. Kinda' interesting to find out what the other folks on the planet think about us in their own words without all the USA chest pounding.

"My point was, it is hard, to almost impossible, to find a news show that does not slant at least some toward one side or the other. That is what I find sad."

Why sad? It is so natural--give someone a microphone or a word processor and they use it to push their own agenda or the agenda of their employers. It is the way it is. What is truly sad is that we expect more--or some of us do. I think most folks understand that what they are seeing is only part of the story--not the whole story. Sure is better than having a situation where news is controlled and the "Truth Police" tell us what they want us to hear, know, or believe.
I like the tug and pull of competing ideas. It does lead to some confusion but if one works hard enough they can find what is most "probably" the case. "Truth" is the realm of the scientist--they can "prove" things to be absolute. In the world of politics, social interaction, justice, etc. we are in the area of probabilities, what is "probably" the most correct of the competing ideas or understandings.

Another problem our current news programming has is "what is news". On a scale from one to ten where does abortion/healh care/the economy/wall street debacles/high crude prices and the why's/religion/Afgan war/home and foreign terrorism/mid east problem/crime and drugs/unemployment/outrageous exec bonuses/Michael Jackson/Iraq war/etc. Where does all that enter in news programming agenda on the 5 o'clock news.

McCarthyism type nationalistic bilge is rearing its ugly head again in a different form in the last 10-15 years although hopefull mainstream press/media isn't being sucked in as happened in the '50s red scare that ruined many innocent American lives/careers.

Whats news ?? Anyone want more Michael Jackson on the 5 o'clock news.

As the OP,I think this is a great thread but I'm a bit concerned that it could possibly degenerate into a political liberal vs conservative bash.

I would appreciate it if we can focus on the original purpose without getting into political overtones, which as we know will shut down this thread.

Thank you and I've copied the original post once more for reference.

What do ratings of news sows tell us ?

Interesting article. I wouldn't want to be a news show producer...trying to figure out what and how to present the news in order to get the biggest draw.

I'm sometimes at a loss to determine what's important in news and what isn't..as much news seems to be presented in a frenetic...BREAKING NEWS format It used to be that breaking news was reserved for something really big...like the fall of communism and the iron curtain.

Now a water main break in downtown Baltimore in national breaking news.

So my question is:

As a news consumer and aren't we all...what type of news presentation style would you like to see used to present national / international news ...or even your local channel news?

What do you want from your news presentation?

BTW I don't want to get this thread shut down...so if we could confine comments to general comments about styles of presentation, importance of credibility, etc...rather than compare one news commentator to another...ie; liberal vs conservative styles....as that would get too political very quickly.

Thank you.

I wish I could remember who said it, but I always liked the quote, "Everything you read in the paper (or hear on the news) is true, except for the story about which you have personal knowledge."
Sometimes its all about the slant and sometimes its because the reporter
(make that news reader) is dumb as an ox.

We all have different views on the media and it's methods of presentation, but it works for them and that's what counts. "For them that is".

Go with the "Talking Head" that appeals to your individual taste.

Criticize the networks all you want, but truthfully, they are giving their audience exactly what their audience wants. And that is what I find discouraging.
