Just got a new to me 07 Cummins with 26k on it-was lloking over the engine this weekend and saw a Valvoline oil filter on the engine-the dealer said oil and filter was done there. I know the 6.7 use a special oil-how worried should I be? Their used car make-ready department probably did the oil change and I am wondering since I bought it from the Dodge dealer why they did not use the Dodge oil filter...? Also noticed oil was BLACK-normal for a 6.7?

A Dodge dealer should know better than using a generic oil filter on a CTD. I would even question if the oil had been changed.
As for the black oil, that's normal. I changed the oil in my 07 6.7 CTD this weekend and the oil was black after starting it up to check for leaks. It has always looked that way after 4 oil changes.
Take it back to the dealer and speak to the sales manager. Get them to change the oil using a MOPAR oil filter and CJ-4 15W40 or 5W40 oil.

I operate a pennzoil quick lube and my dist sells filters and oil to several dodge dealerships in my area. So never say they didnt change the ol many dealerships have switched to using pennzoil, valvoine filters and oil in their bays. As for wimpy filters, check who makes the filter before you call them wimpy.

Most of the dealers actually run the recommended OIL which is VALVOLINE from the factory and a few (like this one maybe) likely source VALVOLINE filters also. The actual "Mopar" filters that most of the dealers are going to use on the Cummins is a Fleetgard filter with Mopar sticker on it made by Fleetgard and sold with the Mopar name on it for sale at dealerships so they can charge more for it- no joke. After a few oil change cycles the engine will always retain enough soot and such to "blacken" the oil almost immediately. It's no big deal, in a diesel black oil is not necessarily "dirty" like in a clean little gas engine.

BUT-------- if it was me and mine, I would change it now and put in a nice Fleetgard Stratapore filter and the nice high quality CJ-4 engine oil of choice and double check everything on the truck including axle fluid levels, trans fluid, power steering, grease all lube points, replace fuel and air filters, etc. just to get a nice fresh starting point for my maintenance program.

It's true....Cummins recommends Valvoline blue. It's what I run. I wouldn't worry. Change it and move on.

change it to suit your needs and move on.
BTW all diesels do not automatically have black oil immediately after an oil change. When it comes to my psd, that is completely urban legend.
So lets do it and then you don't have to be conderned.
If it was me I would have had it changed already, but I am sure the sales people would have the straight skinney.

My 2002 Cummins would stay clean (honey colored) for thousands of miles before it began to darken (even at 100hp over stock). In my current 07 (5.9L - no DPF) truck, the oil is black as soon as I start the thing after changing the oil.
