I worry at time about running out of diesel. I can't afford an extra fuel tank but thought of carrying extra fuel in a can in the bed of the truck. I have stored gas in plastic cans before and they seemed to leak or at least I could smell some gas. Are metal cans better or have I just bought cheap plastic cans that leaked.
Thanks for any help.

Stay with the plastic jugs as the condensation will rust the inside of the metal cans. If I'm going a new route I carry a 5 gal jug with about 4.5 gals in it to allow for expansion and have had no problems.

I don't have a diesel but just wondering, is diesel fuel not available everywhere? It does seem like lots of diesel owners have an extra fuel tank.

diesel is not available at all gas stations, and diesel trucks tend to tow larger trailers and more often then gas trucks, so access to the pump can be an issue.

Some of the small out in the country gas stations do not have Diesel. Not hard to find near major highways though. I sure wouldn't want to run out.

If you can find a way to afford it, get a real tank. Spend some time in junk yards and see what you can find. Is a few gallons going to ease your concern very much? It wouldn't make much of a difference to me. Plus you have the safety factor (not good) of those flimsy jugs, and you have to actually use that fuel and replenish it every so often or it gets old. It's heavy too.
I carry 20 on board and 50 more in the bed, and I get nervous when I have 20 gallons left. I get 9 mpg.

When I travel to a new place unknown to me, I will carry three five gallon diesel containers which on my F250 would give me half a tank. Which should be more than enough to get to a diesel station. You have to remember this country is run on diesel,Trucks,Trains,Shipping,Air. Oh yea I have never had to use my 15 gal reserve.

I carry 5 gal of diesel in the front of the fiver. Haven't had to use it yet but it gives me a comfort level that I didn't have before. We all have probably pushed it a little far at onetime or another.
I acquired a 50gal tank for the truck bed when I first started towing with a diesel but never installed it. Probably never will unless diesel prices go stupid.
