We are leaving out tomorrow and the change fuel filter message came on. I have the new filter with me but how far can we go safely without changing it? We have just a bit over 18,000 miles on it and we have never changed the filter yet.

change it..the DIC is strictly a calculator, change every 10k and you will be worry free. With winter coming on it is especially a good idea to have a dry filter

I agree. . . change it now. You will likely notice that your truck will run better. I change mine at about 10k miles, and it is usually really dirty. I can't imagine how dirty it would be at 18k. You don't want to be changing it on the side of the road somewhere, or paying a tow bill plus the cost of having it changed.

I would change before leaving. Especially important in case you break something. Better to get it at home than on the road.

Friend has a leaking valve on his WIF sensor. Cost about $75.00 at the Chevy dealer.

I would go with the rest of the gang.. Change it now.. Terry is right, you don't want to be fooling around with it along the road someplace..

Hi,

Back in 1984 when I bought a diesel Isuzu, I was told to carry a spare fuel filter just in case you end up buying fuel from a station that has a lot of bacteria in the fuel tanks. One bad tank of fuel can use up the fuel filter.

You must have a good local supplier, as your filter has lasted this long (about 1,000 - 1,500 gallons?) But on the trip, it is possible to get tanked, and then you might need two fuel filters - one to use up the rest of the fuel and then get some new fuel, then replace that one after two tanks of clean fuel go through, so you will have a clean filter for the next 10,000 miles.

As for changing it today, I would not worry about going another 1,000 miles. It is probably a speedometer tripped setting, not a actual pressure drop across the filter.

Good Luck,

Fred.

Not sure on Chevys but my Dodge takes bout 15 minutes to change, half an hour if you count washing my hands. So why not change it now. I try to change oil every 5000 miles so I change the filter every other oil change.

Have to agree, every other oil filter change. (5000 + 5000 = 10000) Cheap insurance for a really expensive engine.

It's a bit of a PITA on a Duramax, I changed my buddys 07 for him, but it didn't help that his truck is 12ft. in the air.Heck, I can take mine out just to look at it, and put it back in just a few minutes.

I won't comment on your rig, but I did want to comment on folks that always indicate that diesel is dirty compared to gas. How often do you think otr trucks change the filter? I been there, we ran until a power loss was noticed, and that was never for me.

Anyhow I have an old tech 99 psd and changed the first filter at 100K miles. I got 42K on the current filter and it is still rattling along.

I think that all the comments about diesel being dirty ia surely an urban legend.

I am getting old and paranoid and think I will change the one in it before I hit the road this winter.
