Thinking about a new F150. Not Super Crew but has extended cab. 5.4, 6 speed auto, loaded with tow pkg and brake controller. Also would be switching to a pop up camper for a short box.

Would this engine/trans combo have enough umph?

Unless I got a stripped version of the F250 it is another 10K. Plus no V10s left.

For hauling a camper I'd suggest you go with the HD option to get the 3,000 lb payload version. The 5.4 will handle the power just fine but without the payload (hd option) you'll have the same weight limitations as most any other half ton.

Hi,

Have you heard of this hard sided trailer?

aLiner.com

These set up in about a minute, and have hard sides to keep heat in, prevent humidity from getting the inside wet, and don't have to be set up in a dry place if it happens to rain on the day you are planning on going home.

It is really easy to pull behind a 1/2 ton too!

The 5.4L has something like 300 HP. I don't have that much in my 30' Bounder with a 460" 7.5L. I don't think you will lack power. I had a 5.4L in a work truck, and it took on the hills just fine with 8,000 pounds in the van. 75 MPH was no problem either. That van had 225,000 miles on it when I left the company. Some of the vans had a lot more mileage than mine had.

What more are you looking for?

Good Luck,

Fred.

The OP is not going to pull anything..... He is talking about a popup TRUCK camper.
I agree with Skip..... look for a HD version or at least a 250.

Pop-ups don't necessarily mean light weight. I have seen numerous pop-ups that outwiegh my hardside. It's the options and modern conveniences that add on the weight.

Power wise, the 5.4 will easily handle any TC the truck will carry. The load of a TC is much less than a 7,000# trailer and I see the 5.4 hauling them all the time, usually as they pass me since I run under the speed limit.

If I ever go to look at another truck, my test drive will include running the truck across a scale so I know the true capacity before I buy the truck.

I like that new F-150 with its 2600# load capacity too. The six speed (co-developed with General Motors) is awesome.

As for the small block = plenty of power and reasonable 4x4 gas mileage to boot. You will be glad you didn’t buy a V10

Looking for any information available on Del Rey "Sky Lounge" and Kamp King slide-ins for preservation/restoration projects.

The motor will be fine for hauling a truck camper. You can gear it with 4.10's if you need more power.

I agree, the HD version and longbox would be my choice if I wanted an F150 to haul a camper.

For some comparison, I had a 2000 ½ ton (5.3L with auto) Chevy short bed and hauled an Outfitter Caribou with no problems. Only suspension mod I did was Timbrens. Power was plenty for me and I thought overall it was a good combo. I am sure the 2010 F-150 has way more power and payload than my truck had, so I think it would really be do-able for you.
