We bought a new Jayco 35RLTS and I thought I would disinfect the fresh water tank and lines. We have used the unit for two weeks and are still getting quite a smell and bleach taste from our taps. Any suggestions to get rid of it?

Hi,

There is a saying that I heard once, the Solution to Pollution is Dilution.

So if you have 15 PPM free chlorine in the water, then adding another few gallons of water will bring down that super high concentration. I would fill the tank, drain the water heater, and then run some water through the pump out the water heater drain, then re-insert the plug. Fill the tank, and run some into each fauscet. Fill the tank to almost the top, then take the RV for a drive. This will slosh the water around, and help clean any chlorine from the tank.

Drain and repeat until the water does not smell. Then it will be ready to use.

You might have to dissolve a tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of water, add that to the water fill hose, then add that to the fresh water tank. This might help get rid of some of the smell.

Next time mix up a tablespoon of Clorox. This is about 5% chlorine, and that is 50,000 PPM. Mixed with 10,000 tablespoons of water, then you will get 5 PPM free chlorine in the water tank, plenty to sanitize the tank.

There is 3 tablespoons in a ounce of water, and 132 ounces per gallon. So 8 gallons is about 1,000 tablespoons. 1 tablespoon is enough to treat up to 80 gallons!

Mix the tablespoon of clorox in a cup of water, and then pour this into a drinking water hose, and fill the water tank. Really easy.

Good Luck,

Fred.

just run a ton of water through the tank and lines and next time don't use such a strong solution of bleach to disinfect the system.

Just wondering if you have an in line water filter with the cartridge. If you do maybe change the cartridge. If not, then lots of fresh water through the tank and lines. Good luck.

There's really very little water in the lines themselves, it's probably residual in the tanks.

As said about all you can do is dilute it. Fill and drain the tanks (heater too) until the smell goes away, then fill and run water through the lines.

Cheers !!!

Open the derain valve for the water tank and take the trailer for a drive on a curvy road with lots of starts and stops. After about a half hour your tank should be very CLOSE to completely empty and you can then flush it out effectively. OK mod you can delete this now

I gave it a guess once and mixed the bleach too strong - and for days it would whiten your teeth! It took several weeks to get back to normal. I did hear the baking soda can help.
