We are at Indian Creek RV park in Ft. Myers Beach. The entire town is linked by bike trails. You can ride from the park all the way to Lover's Key State Park on a trail.
I am an avid bicycle rider and for a couple months during the winter in Florida I pick a 'rail to trail" and ride it.
I suggest the 35.5 mile Pinella's Trail which I rode last March. It is a neighborhood to neighborhood trail. It is considered the model for those considering building a "long distance" bike path in Florida. It starts in St. Petersburg and ends in Tarpon Springs. I would not recommend Clearwater-Tarpon Springs campground (formerly KOA) that I stayed in to ride it. The campground had extremely low voltage (low 90's) during some of the colder nights. I suggest staying in the Dunedin area, which has lots of facilities. The northern end would be 13.5 miles and the southern would be 22 miles.
Dunedin RV Resort is on or very near the trail and was highly recommended on this forum. It was full when I wanted to be there. Here is the link to my post last year. There are a lot of recommendations for campgrounds near the trail.
I rode through the KOA in St Petersburg. Even though there was nothing good written about it on the forums, it looked fine and was full, but some sites were tight and it is expensive. Lots of activities going on when I rode through.
Trails to Rails Conservancy website is a great resource. Florida's Paved Bike Trails by Jeff and Gretchen Kunerth Copyright 2008 is also a great resource. The book is broken into geographical sections, (north, central etc) of the state. Unless you are familiar with the counties of the state, you will need a state map when looking at the book.
My plan this year is to ride the 46 mile Withlacoochee State Trail and the 26.3 mile northern segment of the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail.
There are several parks with easy access to the West Orange Trail that runs between Clermont FL and Apopka Fl. The trail is about 50 miles end to end and paved. There are a number of trailheads with parking and facilities as well as several towns. Horseman's Park, (County)in Apopka and Sun Resort, are right on the trail. There are other paved trails in the area as well that are long enough for a good ride. If you decide to come down this way and would like company on a ride or two, let me know. We will be there after November 20th.
Sanlan RV Park has about 3.5 miles of bike trails through the old phosphate mine area that is now Brambleridge Golf Coarse, and there is a paved rail trail from Lakeland to Bartow, about 7 miles long.
