I have a Garmin 2730 with the 2010 update. I am planning a trip to Alberta, Canada next summer. I am wondering how much I will be able to use my Garmin as is , will I have to add anything to get the coverage I need

Don't know about the Garmin but my 3 year old Lowrance worked fine.

If you are at the Garmin try routing to Alberta and see what happens. You could then search for `restaurants' near the destination or `fuel', etc. to see what coverage you have.

No Problem- If you have the North America map installed (Which is the normal situation). My Garmin C530 and 265WT have guided me completely across Canada and as far south as the RGV.

I went in to the language function of my Garmin and Canadian is not on the list. English, French, Spanish and German are choices but no Canadian. It should work in Quebec though.

The GPS will work just fine... The problem is that most Garmin (And other company products) are actually two devices in one box... The GPS is one device, it will properly report your latitude, longitude and altitude for wherever it is most anywhere on the surface of earth or in the atmosphere (outer space it gets a bit iffy)

The problem is the mapping system..... May or may not know Canada.

Since I use a Garmin E-Trex (Very basic, no maps) and Microsoft S&T on the laptop via a tether cable.... Mine works great.. wherever I happen to be in North America (The map datum I have is N.A. I'm not sure what else is on the CD)

I've had several Garmins of the Etrex series & yes the basemap (at least in Canada) is brutal. Only the major highways & major bodies of water are shown. Even the outline of the lakes is approximate @ best. City Navigator North America is definately needed when using these units.
