TomG2 wrote: Does anyone have the torgue and rpm numbers for the 2-valve and 3-valve 5.4 engines handy? As I recall, a truck like Skip's old one actually put more torque to the wheels at lower RPM's than the newer models. It is nice to have peak torque in the two to three thousand range instead of above. For me anyway.

The numbers for a 2009 F-150 5.4 V-8 gas are 365 ft lbs @ 3,500 RPM. Only 4% more at 40% more RPM's. I liked having that peak a thousand RPM's less. I had to run in second gear more with my 2005 than I did with my 2003.

If it's anything like the torque band of the 5.7L Hemi, it makes 80% of it's peak torque at 1200rpm and makes a gradual climb to peak and fall to peak hp rpm where it starts to run out of breath. Peak torque rpm doesn't mean there's nothing above or below. It's just not plateau flat like a Cummins.

What is funny is that Ford bragged in their 2003 commercials about having maximum torque at lower RPM's than the competition but dropped those commercials when they went to the 3-valve configuration. I don't have the graphs in front of me but remember running in second gear an awful lot more with the 2005, pulling the same trailer. Both were great trucks, F-150 Supercabs with 3.73 axle ratios. The 05 was faster if you wound her up enough.

It's great to see that there are indeed other people just as happy as me with there half tons ability.
While I am happy with my 5.4L I am also a little eager to see how Ford's new 6.2L does. From what I have read it is going to be a very stout power plant outting out 411 hp and 434 lbft. I thinksits due out early in the 2010 model year first in the new F-150 Raptor.
Overall as many of you guys have said our half tons are plenty capable as long as you are towing smart and within limits.

Quite happy with mine overall. Handles very well with the trailer. I found hills could be a struggle but have since solved that with some forced induction. I'll keep this truck probably another 8 years.

The F-150 w 5.4 is a nicely matched truck/power combination when properly paired with a trailer within it's towing capacity. Ford makes a fine 1/2 ton truck.

I used to tow with a 92 Dodge Dakota Magnum 5.9 4x4 short bed.. A 19 foot, 21 foot and a 24 lite... It did GREAT...Should have seen the looks on people's faces when they saw that 24 footer being pulled by a Dakota!! Put the 24 foot up for sale and a guy with a Ford Ranger V-6 bought it... I said, 'are you planning on pulling this with that Ranger?", he said," you pulled it with a Dakota!"... Ummmm ok...

I pulled my 30 foot ultralight with a 2004 Dakota quad cab for a couple years. My parents pull a very similar TT with it now. 4x4 quadcab v8 4.7L. It does just fine in the rolling hills of southern Missouri, as does my current 1/2 ton Ram.
I am not at all surprised that there are many satisfied F150 owners out there. The 5.4 Triton does a fine job from everything I've read, and the F150 is a strong pickup.

I really liked my 03 F150, I guess the big thing for us was putting on long distance days, we put 5500+ km on in three weeks. My truck really liked its fuel, even pulling at 90kph. The biggest down fall I found was not mountians or traffic but the wind. With our TT it would just slow my truck down to 80kph with any type of good headwind and I'd have to kick it down. Miss have a truck that was paid for.
