Of course, none of us want to take a chance with saftety and the analogy of driving without inssurance is good. However, it is not clear from the various sources of information how frequently do the cracks occur in models after 2005. The article in FMC (Nov. 09) spends a significant amount of time talking about the product made by Source Manufacturing. However, there appears to be no official response of recomendatio from NTSB. IS THE CRACK PROBLEM SEVERE ENOUGH TO WARRENT REPLACEMENT OF ARMS EVEN IF THEY AR NOT CRACKED? One can always do something or add a modification to make a MH safer, but is the cost justifiec. I honestly cannot tell from the responses.

Yes our trailing arms go under the axle.. But as I said before ours wasn't on the serial number list on the orginial recall.. We weren't recalled and when I ask Monaco about it, they said ours wasn't included.. So that's what we're going by.. I don't feel the need or can we justify running out and doing this.. I will keep a close eye on them.. If you look at the second recall replacement arms, they were(looked like) aluminum, from the pictures I've seen, and I think they made it worse than the first ones.. But thanks for your concern, I will watch them..

There was a posting on IRV@ of a 2007 that had them break. There is a lot of folks who have had them break. We don't hear from folks who haven't had a problem. I have one of these units and with all the talk I can't just ignor it.
Once my rear shocks get here I'm off to the shop. Right now the plan is to do some welding (the arms are not cast iron). I look forward to seeing how they look once removed. Seems some folks don't see any problems until they are removed then a crack may be seen. And if the welder feels it not a good idea to weld, then I'll go with Source. The old arms have to come off for reinfrocement or replacement, same labor. There is a huge diffrence from a $3000 replacement or a $1000 reinforcement.
Until a couple of pros look at the arms on the bench all cleaned up I just don't know. I trust these pros and they will deal with my arms like their kids would be riding in the coach.

If your trailing arms go under the axle then you have nothing to worry about, it's the four bag suspension that has the trailing arms on top of the axle that's causing the problems

One of my very best friends is a top notch welder and as good a welder he is, he is not an engineer. The arms from Source are re-engineered, there's more to it then just welding some metal to them.

I also might ad that many of us who have had these arms replaced have filed a complaint with NTSB. The problem lies with Monaco filing bankruptcy and then the purchase by Navistar.

Also, since Monaco is out of business they can't possibly update the recall list! NHTSA can only force a recall against a company that is still in business. If more arms break on serial numbers not already on the recall list there is nothing NHTSA can do for you.
Just because yours aren't on the list doesn't mean they shouldn't be!!
Personally If we had Monaco manufactured arms under our rig I'd sure find a way to REPLACEreplace them!!

Considering that a very small minority of RVers participates in these forums, added to the fact that there's no one taking responsibility at Monaco, it seems like there's a lot of potential for disaster out there waiting to play out. Get it fixed or don't get it fixed. Either way, when I see a Roadmaster coming my way, I'm moving over.
