Is the consensus out there that prices are high on used 3/4 ton diesel trucks or is it just my inexperience as I look at prices on the internet. Looks like my budget of around $16,000-$19,000 will only get one in the 2003-2005 range with quite a lot of miles? Or are sellers coming down thousands on their asking prices?

The high prices of used diesels is why I bought new when we were looking.

2003 Jayco 308fbs eagle 33' tt, towed by a 2003 Ram 3500 slt, quad cab dually, cummins diesel ho, trailer towing package, with 6 speed manual. Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. Good used diesels have always been high and I think they may be a little stiffer now as they have cut way back on production. In the end of 08 I bought a new Chevy D/A for 34k that was listed for almost 48k. I don't think you can come anywhere close to that kinda deal now as production is way way down. I think I was lucky but maybe there still out there like that.

Some of the High Prices are for TOP OF THE LINE Excellent Condition Ones.. For example, I have an 04 that went up in value over the Past year.. Dodge Cummins Dually 4x4 Laramie ... Dealer retail is 29200!!! Private Party is around 26,000 plus..The Dually s are not that hard to find but a Laramie is... Especially when the Color is other than White or Silver.. When the Condition is OUTSTANDING and the mileage is Very Low, they can bring PREMIUMS...The 5.9s seem to be what most folks want right now. The later models and the 6.7s are equipped with smog equipment and the earlier 5.9s are being sought after ..The New Laramie's are over 60k!! so under 30 k seem like a bargain...The 04s still have the Drivetrain Warranty for 2 more years and up to 100k miles...

5.9 4X4's here are very popular. Prices seem to be high.

Same here as Dave17352. Bought a used 2007 Dodge approximately 8 months ago with the new 6.7 liter engine, mega cab, 4x4 and 14k miles on it for $34,000.00.

Last spring when I was looking for a used 3/4 ton truck I did look for a diesel at first. It seemed to me that they were commanding premium prices for used late model (2003-2006). In most cases you were looking at 10-12K more than a gasser. With the added maintenance of a deisel and the very few miles I drive (under 6k/yr) I decided it wasn't worth the extra money.

I just wonder if some of it isn't due to the newer deisels being more complicated to work on and lower fuel econmy. With the emissions issues people just don't want to trade up to put more used ones on the market. Plus, you do have the expense of newer ones and with the econmy being what it is good used ones are in short supply.

just my .02

I think one reason that used diesels (pre DPF) are higher is because of the increased emissions equipment. I bought my truck new in September 2006 because deals were GREAT and because of the upcoming emissions crap.

I got my truck brand new for $33k out the door and it stickered for $46k. I knew about the new emissions stuff coming and didn't want any part of it. Only a few months ago, I was getting my tires rotated and a guy walked up unsolicited and offered me $30k cash for my truck.

Plan on keeping this truck for a LONG time.

I done the same thing. My truck listed at $52K I paid 36K, I bought on GMS plan. I don't know what GMS pricing on my truck is now, but I bet it is more than that.

Sounds like they are high. It's seeming more like I may stick to a 1/2 ton gasser to pull my small 5th wheel because I will be able to get so much more truck for a given amount of money.
