I'm interested in learning the ropes of doing this on my own, I have been to the county website and I never see any openings for volunteer positions to work at one of our local county parks such as Schroeder Park or Indian Mary, etc.
I learned that the commitment is a year long, and I would not mind that somewhat (well I'd have no choice) but there never seems to be an opening and these parks may be small and do get busy in the peak season I want to try a smaller park before getting my "feet wet" at bigger parks like Valley Of the Rogue RV park on I-5.
I'm the kind of person who likes to try a little at a time, so the one year commitment seems a bit of a stretch but I think I could do it if the park was fairly easy to work. I am interested in having something to do for 6 hours 5 days a week in exchange for not having to pay rent or electricity as I would try my best at doing the best I can.
I can't leave my local area really, I also have other commitments so being able to workcamp and live locally for 6-12 months would be perfect and I could add it to my resume so does anybody have any ideas? (other than go talk to the current volunteer and see what the status is and whom to contact, etc).

This is about the only option I can think of. We have done it in the past, and got jobs at primo places! Go....talk with them.....

Talk to the owner, ranger,or manager and tell them what you would like to do. You may be surprised at the answer. If you talk to the other volunteers you may not get the real truth in some cases. Small parks tend to be a little on the protective side of their position. We went through that and when we talked to the manager we started two weeks later and could still be there if we liked. Sell yourself to the people that do the hiring.

Great advice, thanks will post back when I have results.
Are you only able to go to the local county park, or could you go to some other area or state? We have been doing volunteer work now for most of the time for ten years and have never been asked for a full year. We would never accept that long a stay in one location.
We have found that most state parks will accept a volunteer for a term of between one and three months. Most federal agencies want three months or longer. The counties that we have been with were from one to three month minimum. We have also found that many agencies will not allow a volunteer to stay for more than six months.

Since I already have prior commitments, I have limited options at the moment.
I would not mind the state park on I-5 but right now I do not feel that is a wise choice at this time. I am either interested in two parks in my area because of their local/close proximity to where I am now.
I do not have a problem with a year long commitment as long as my previous commitment is within that time frame, though the longer I procrastinate the less time there will be in my 1 year commitment.
I spoke with a friend who has done it in the past, the rules have changed since he has done it so I'm not sure what all the rules are and can't seem to find the rules for the parks I want to volunteer at.
I'll be asking hopefully next week if/when I feel a tad better or when my priorities don't unmotivate me.
