According to the Department of Transportation, a domestic flight gets about 55MPG per passenger seat. See this link. But they only average 79% capacity so the real number is about 43MPG per passenger. Lets compare that against some RV scenarios.
RV................MPG..Passengers..MPG/Passenger
Diesel Class A....11....2........22
Fifth wheel..........9....4........36
SUV & PUP.........12....5........60
Minivan.............18....5........90
Commuter...........22....1........22
It is hard to get the chart to look right, hope you can understand it. You can play with the numbers but you get the idea. Flying can save some fuel but it is not near as fun. And a single commuter burns as much fuel as a diesel Class A.

Yes, but. Can you get that plane in a $25.00 per night campground? It may save a little fuel, but is more costly to do. \
BTW. Still gota drive from the airport to where ever you want to go. So not even much fuel savings.

After putting up with what I had to on my last flight - you will have to arrest and handcuff me to get me on another commercial coach flight.
This doesn't include all the airport baloney.

Certainly worth a thought. If MPG were the only consideration, travel by plane is not only more efficient, it's much safer than driving.
OTOH, pretty much everyone on this forum would agree that RVing isn't about efficiency. We could fly and stay in hotels with rental cars but we choose to spend our time and money traveling in a "house on wheels" for reasons that are as different as there are people who do it.

I WISH my DP got 11. 7-8 MPG more like it.
We are flying to Dallas for four nights at Thangksgiving. Not much fun taking the DP for a four night, 1000 mile trip.
Haven't figured out how to drive it to Europe either.
Not to mention the $10K per year depreciation.

I would still prefer to travel with my RV over any other mode. But if you want to look at mpg economy, check out the railroad. They have some pretty impressive money saving numbers.

But, with your observation, you're not taking into account that a 7 or 8-day cross country drive can be made in about 5 hours in a plane, so no need for overnighting or several days worth of food. Just an added thought.
