I've been boondocking on my 2 acres in northern lower Mi. Transplanting pines. Was in a hurry to get it done prior to firearms deer opener the 15th. Going thru propane for my 5er and gas for the Honda and just plain relaxing and having the Dobie "Jazz" take me for frequent walks. This morning on the way back from picking up the Traverse City paper I noticed a bright orange color which resembled a survey tape, but this area was on the Consumers Energy property adjacent to mine. I slowed and then saw a deer's head, two small nubs a young buck and it looked like one of those target figures, then its ear twitched and to my surprise realized it was a real deer and an arrow was lodged it the back top of its head, the bright orange color was the quill end of the arrow,\. I called Wexford County Sheriff and told the dispatcher I was retired from Kalamazoo County Sheriff so they didnt think I was a quack, they sent out a State Trooper who used his binoculars and he said the arrow was inbedded in its head but he didnt see blood, when he started walking towards it, the deer got up and ran into the wooded area, My first observation, I thought the arrow was in its neck above its sholder but I have never seen this before in my 34 years of Law Enforcement. I hope its found and put out of its missery. You may ask why I'm sharing this its because if you see something unusual and it gets your attention you may be able to just help out. Bill

Someone had to shoot it in the head on purpose. If they missed it bad enough to hit its head, that's just wild. People do some crazy things, what you described is just one of them, but that animal could live a long time like that. I did see Gus on Lonesome Dove have to get his leg cut off from an Indian arrow.

It will suffer a slow death from gangrene. I've found a few that were hit in the spine area from almost straight down shots from stands. Bow hunting is a lot harder than with a gun even though you are closer. Used to tell my nephews to practice and then practice more until they could put EACH and EVERY arrow into a cigarette pack at 45 yards from every imaginable shooting position. If not, then DO NOT hunt until they can. And yes, they did practice and I don't think they ever missed or lost a deer from a bad shot.

Not necessarily. Arrows can be deflected by a twig and go anywhere.

Exactly what I have been telling my hunting buddies for years. They never did believe my stories of twig miscues

Or deer feeder legs (no comments now). Those thing that may deflect an arrow become out of focus or you just don't "see" them when you are concentrating on your shot placement. Believe me, been there done that and it isn't fun.
Heck even with a rifle things like that can go unnoticed. My BIL shot at a HUGE buck and MISSED because of a T-post that was in between him and the deer. The bullet deflected off of the post that completely went unnoticed due to his concentration on the shot!

I used to work in a slaughter house years ago and we processed deer. One evening while working the band saw I broke the saw blade when slicing out shoulder steaks. Come to find out there was a broad head in the shoulder of that deer. Apparently this deer had been shot with an arrow some years previously and the shaft had broken off and grown over.
We also had a deer in once geting processed and there was a 22lr bullet in the base of one of the antlers. The bullet had almost broken the antler off but it grew back. It must have been shot when the deer was in velvet
Deer are very strong and can recover from some pretty bad wounds.
