Here is how it happens...

In your "Yahoo!" or "HotMail" inbox you probably got a message that appeared to come from one of your contacts. When you opened the message you were taken to a page that looks just like the Yahoo! or HotMail log-in page.

When you entered your log-in info (name and password) that info was sent to hijackers. The hijackers now have full access to your account.

This hijacking has been going on for a few years and I have received a bunch of those email messages in my Yahoo email but I knew how to recognize the spoofed log-in page so I didn't get hijacked.

If that is the case they should see the original email in their sent folder/box just as if they had sent it themselves. I doubt if that is the case, but if they dont post back we will never know.

The only way to know for sure about which pages are spam and which are not is dont use the emails to connect to the internet. You should initiate the login as you always do - from your PC links, not someone else' email.

DC&MC - are you out there or did they take your PC too?

My wife used to give me $1.00 each workday for lunch. After a long argument, I won. Now she gives me $5.00 every Monday.

this happened to me couple of weeks ago too. a few of the contacts didn't go through and it said email failure in my inbox. That was my only indication something like this happened. I changed my passwords in Facebook and Hotmail and haven't seen anything so far.

My cousin in England said she couldn't understand why I was sending her an email about a Canadian pharmacy, so that must have been what the attachment was. I told her what happened but haven't heard from her, hope she didn't get a virus from that.

This recently happened to me (called to notify as many people I could in my yahoo address book). Besides all of the great advise I got from y’all. I called Webroot (I will say this is one reason I like and will support Webroot) and spoke to a live tech person (from the US…LOL).

He told me what happened is I got an email worm which allowed my email account to be compromised, but wasn’t able to have a tech person to go into my computer to remove it because I’m on an air card. He did send me the info to do the search and removal manually.

Since my yahoo is my personal and business account. I downloaded a free HD wipe program (didn’t realize my OS’s disc had a wipe program integrated into it) and wiped my HD. Then did a clean install, after which I immediately changed my password. Before updating or installing the rest of my programs.

PS I did a full search with both Malwarebyte’s and Webroot on Safe Mode and came up with "No Infections Found".

PSS All emails sent out did not have a subject heading on the email. Most individuals on my address book, when they saw that the email didn't have a subject in it's heading. Dismissed it an did not open it. The one's that did open it, said that there was some sort of advertising pop up (?).

It's me, the original poster again. I did get some of the failure messages in my inbox, for old addresses I had in my book that were no longer good. However, there was nothing in my sent box. There have been between 2 and 4 emails sent to everyone. This stuff just makes me so mad.

When you send an email message from Yahoo! mail there is the option of "Save copy in my sent box" if that is not checked it won't be saved.

Gmail has a filter that traps the "hijack messages" so you never see them and your Gmail account can not be hijacked.

The 'Failed' responses are replies from the server/domain that the email address indicates it to be from. If you send an email to JohnDoe @ brandx.com and it does not exist, you will get a message from the server brandx.com telling you that name JohnDoe doesnt exist on that domain. It still doesnt mean it came from you or your PC. It just replies to the sender email address.

The question - as asked above - do you have the check box for 'Save a copy to my sent folder' checked? If not, then your 'Sent' folder should be empty. If you have other emails you have sent, it must be checked and you should have seen these as well if they were sent by your account.

DC&MC - I still wouldnt be too concerned. However, if it goes on over a week or so you may need to obtain another email address and request your current one be buried. Id wait and watch.
