in one of my upcoming camping outings, I am going to be staying at a state park that has electric hookups. But it just has 50amp connections, and I have a 30amp cord, so I will need an adapter. Should I get this one that has a small cord with it:

or this one, which is just the plug itself:

or does it matter?

I prefer the dog bone, with the short wire. I have a 50 amp to 30 amp and a 30 amp to 20 amp. This covers most needs. Ed

Hi,

A 50 to 30 dog bone is much better than the adapter.

I had a 50 to 30 and dual 20 amp dogbone "box" made up. It has circuit breakers for the 30, and two 20 amp breakers for the duplexed 20 amp outlet. It should prove most useful come winter time for allowing extra power to be used.

You can certainly get by with either. The dog bone is obviously more expensive and is therefore higher quality. I have the Camco 50M/30F dog bone adapter like the one pictured, and have used it a couple times while camping. Like most Camco products, it is very good quality. For at home, I have a couple of the cheaper 15M/30F adapter plugs.

My personal philosophy is that when I am several hundred miles from home and on a family vacation, I want to minimize the possibility that something will break down or not work. I therefore try to invest in the highest quality (and by extension usually the most expensive) equipment that I can afford, within reason. The Camco dog bones run about $20, the adapter plugs run about $5.

The photo you posted of the dog bone looks like a 20 amp to 30 amp and wouldn't do any good in a 50 amp site. You need the same type of adapter with a 50 amp male end and a 30 amp female end. I'd avoid the plug only type and stay with the Dog bone style.

I prefer the adapter, shorter, less voltage drop and usually heaver connection...(more metal) less resistance.

I thought the same about the photo, but a closer look says it's just a bad angle in the photo.

With a 30A rig, I would carry the adapter anyway because the 30A outlet gets a lot more use and are sometimes in not very good condition. The 50A gives you a lot more surface area at the connection.

I like the dogbone, too. Funny story, one of the items I purchased with my 10% discount when I bought my trailer was a dogbone. Trouble is, after hauling it around for almost four years, the other day I looked at it and to my surprise, it is the opposite configuration than I need! It's female 50 Amp to male 30 Amp. How'd I miss that? I would have gotten a surprise if I had ever needed it. Anybody want a bargain???
