Need assistance on adjusting my A&E Dometic 9000 series manual awning. The awning is extending and retracting fine but it needs to retract a few more inches to be tight to the motorhome. Any advice on how to do this safely.

You need to put more turns on the springs inside the awning tube. I just did mine. There's a web site that tells you just how to do it. This is how I did mine. Un-roll awning like you always do. start at one end, undo the top support from the bottom support, remove the bottom support from the holding latch on the rig. Remove the lower portion of the bottom support. Now, while someone holds the awning up, turn the support three turns. The back support you turn clockwise, the front support, you turn counter-clockwise. Remember, just do one end at a time.

Has this always ben a problem, or something new?

If it is new, it could be that awning needs to be adjusted front to back. Get on a ladder and check if main arms are hitting anything that keeps them from being closed. There is a screw usually near the front of the awning that keeps awning fabric from sliding in track. If both arms are hitting say the front of bracket, it could be that screw is loose or missing. If just one arm is hitting bracket, loosen two bolts that hold bracket and tap it over to clear.

Perhaps one of two springs has broken.
