Planning a trip from Amarillo Texas to Montrose Colorado this week pulling 43' Cyclone toy hauler. I have plenty of truck but am looking for the best route.

I'd go up by whatever route you choose to Alamosa, then via Monte Vista north to Saguache, then over North Pass to Gunnison, and finally over to Montrose.

After you get there, loose the 5er and drive down 550, the million dollar hiway, thru Ridgway (the area where True Grit was filmed) Ouray and over Red Mtn Pass to Silverton. Also, go east of Montrose about 10 miles on 50 and take the road to the top of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and follow the road along the rim and check out all the overlooks. Make sure you take a camera - it is spectacular. It's out of the way a little but the drive from Lake City to Creeded is one of the best. That's where the Co. cannibal (Alfred E. Packer) story came from. I don't have a map in front of me but you might be able to go to Southfork, Creede and Lake City on your way to Montrose. Craig

Do as bldbuck suggested. The only real Mountain Pass you will see is Monarch Pass on Hwy 50 west of Salida. It is easy if you got enough truck.

I would go the route through Alamosa-North pass is much easier on the TV
and lower in elevation than Monarch.

I second the route to Alamosa, then to Monte Vista and over North Pass into Gunnison. Pulled over it the last two summers with 40' XLR toyhauler--no problems. Temperature here in Gunnison was 41 last night, and is currently 83. We will be moving over to Montrose Elks Club in about 2 weeks. Have a good trip.

Many years of experience with this drive. Ditto to Tedtoo and all the others recommending North Pass.....

I 70 is not even close to where they should go. I70 is a good road for where it goes. Granted it has a couple of passes but they are not difficult. Look at your map.
