National Park Service News Release
September 2, 2011

The Oregon inlet campground will open September 3 and all other campgrounds remain closed due to damages from Hurricane Irene.

The Wright Brothers National Monument and Fort Raleigh National Historic site are fully reopened.

Coquina Beach and all its facilities has also reopened.

I wonder how much longer any of the OBX will remain open with Hurricane Katia knocking on the door later this week!

Last time we were at Camp Hatteras it was a blast. We were there Apirl 2004, after a fall Hurricane. Ther was still massive damage all along highway 12. The limiting factor seems to be the highway. Back in 2003 the hurricane moved the highway west several feet in multiple places. Needed to be rebuilt and repaved. But, it was ok in April. Nobody there. That was good. The beach was ours.so was the rest of the outer banks.

They are now talking about putting in a temporary bridge to allow access to those areas. I know they said the bridge would accomodate cars and trucks but at pretty reduced speeds. I am not sure if it will be open to tourists or just locals. They did say it would take months to get this done.
