Had a couple Maxxair II covers installed at my local RV dealer when I was having some warrantee work done. This last weekend we went up into OK to go camping...when we raised our awning, my wife noticed a nut that fell down. So when we got it home, we put the awning out, and I climbed up on a ladder to see if I could figure out where it came from. When I did this, I saw another up on top where the awning mounts to the TT. I climbed up on the roof, and could not figure out where it came from. Then I thought about us having the vent covers installed a few weeks ago...so I pulled the pins on them and flipped them up to take a look. This is what I found.
I thought it was optional to screw the bracket to the roof, but I thought you were supposed to screw them to the vent shroud...

Nice crooked bracket...

Why is that little hole in the sealant, and does it go through the roof membrane...

Again, no screws in the vent shroud

Looks like a swing and a miss on the first placement. Yes, they put a screw into my roof, and did not reseal it when they moved it.

Took three tries to get this bracket in the right place. Again, does not look like the holes are sealed.

And again...

None of the screws into the vent shroud

I found two washers under one of the vent covers. So I take it the two nuts we found, were some of the hardware they left behind when they did not install them in the covers. I have probable been dropping the rest of the hardware while driving down the road without knowing it.

I guess I should be thankful they left all the hardware up there, or I might not have noticed the holes until I had a leak. I think the covers have kept most of the rain out of them. What kind of sealant do I need?

Man, that is unbelieveable. I installed mine myself a couple of months ago so I know that that is one hack job install. They are supposed to bolt onto the steel cover, not screw into the roof with one little screw. I had to by a new drill bit to do the drilling.

That was lousy work! I would try to get refunded on the labor... and do it the proper way myself. I feel mad and it's not my trailer so I can imagine what you're feeling.

I would be seriously P..... O.. with that dealer!! They would be repairing/recaulking the holes with my supervision or I would demand a refund on the maxaires! How many holes are there under the brackets??? The only way to find out is to remove everything and start over! After repairs I would tell them that you will never be back!!

Here is the bad thing...I am partially disabled from 20 years in the military. So I try to get some things done by others, instead of aggravating my back and joints by doing it myself. When it came time to wanting the vent covers, I had some expendable cash, so paid someone else to do it. Hind sight being 20/20, I should have saved the money and just did it myself...and dealt with the after effects...which it looks like I will get to do now. I will have to see if I can find my receipt to even know what I paid for the vent install.

I have had a run-in with the owner of the place already. He is the only local guy that does Flag Staff warrantee work (at least that i know of). I doubt he will do anything for me. I will have to print out some pages from the install manual once I find it...and some of these pictures...and go talk to him.

Obviously, the dealer's installing employee didn't bother with the instructions as it isn't even installed in accordance with Maxxair's Installation Guide

Talk about lousy workmanship. They should have read the install instructions.

Good thing you did'nt have any major work done, could you just imagine? I think I would be afraid to have them put air in the tires.

Now that's horrible service. Makes you wonder how many other customers they've done the same thing to. You're right about the unused parts dropping - otherwise you probably wouldn't have known about it until damage was done.

Are you going to remove the brackets and install them the correct way?

The sealant you need is Dicor Self Leveling sealant.
