I have a 2011 Cougar. Does the fresh water tank only fill from the fill neck that runs to the outside of the rv? I know how to fill it but I only use water in the tank when we go to FW. I just openned the drain to make sure it was empty and it drained for like 30 minutes. I have not put water in this tank since last fall and I drained it last November. Is there a possibility that there is a bypass or something that is open? We only camp at places with hookups and are usually within 6 hours or less so we dont carry water with us. But I was thinking the water running in the system from the public hookup was back feeding or a valve open or something like that.

There is no internal bypass fill on a Cougar, so it has to be leaking past the check valve. Probably inside the pump. I suppose a small amount of leakage is common and could be considered normal, or at least common. I'm thinking it is a very small leak, over a long time, and that is why the overflow was not breached.

And BTW, 30 minutes to drain is not surprising. They leave a stub of hose with a capped fitting on it for draining. And it is slow. I removed that and installed a plain plastic pipe plug in the tank. I get a little wetter when I pull it, but it drains twice as fast now.

more than likely the check valve that is in the line behind the city water hook up is bad and allowing the water go to the tank or maybe the check valve that is in the water pump is bad and allowing to back feed to the tank.

If that was the case then water would come out of the overflow when hooked up to city water. There could be a valve that allows the city water to fill the water tank but it would need to be shutoff once the tank is filled. If the check valve has a slow leak it maybe possible to fill and have overflow without noticing the overflow. Are you sure you did not fill it at some point?

Your water pump may have a bad diaphragm Has it been cycling when no water is being called for?

Are you sure that you opened the fresh tank drain, or the low point drain?

My Jayco had both. One drained the tank and the other just drained the pipes; if pressurized by city water, would drain indefinitely.

Were you connected to city water when you opened that drain? Try disconnecting city water. This is really the only way to know anything about your situation.

Thanks everyone. The water pump was new in June, it was replaced under warranty. The service place just told me that the service tech probably didnt empty the tank after he installed and tested the new water pump. They also stated that the new pump could be bad too, soooooo just keep an eye on it. LOL. Typical reponse to everything. Thanks for the imput.
