We have a Super Glide hitch for our short wheel base truck. This is not a "brand new" unit, had it a while. But we are having increasing problems hitching and unhitching. The grears along the glide keep locking in and won't let me hook up securly. (or at least that is what I think) Anyone else had this problem?

Just put a new one in my tow, so no experience, but while researching this hitch comments were made by those who owned them that it needed to be on relatively level ground to hitch up easily. If that's not the case you may need to contact Pull Rite. It may need an adjustment.

Do you ever lubricate the 5th wheel plate "gears"? You should lubricate them periodically with WD40 or 3in1 oil. I take my entire hitch apart annually and check everything and lube it up nicely. I have the 18k superglide.
I would pull the 5th wheel plate off and flip it over to make sure it isn't all gunked up.

I have the 18K pullright superglide and if I am not on level ground I also have had issues hooking and unhooking. Great hitch though.

As mentioned, occasional cleaning and lubricating of the mechanisms is encouraged.
Are you able to trip the coupler by pushing on the trigger just inside the kingpin opening on the hitch? Use something like the tip of a screw diver, but not your fingers. If it works repeatedly without a problem it could be your pin-box height when connecting. I used to have a problem once in a while until I learned to have the trailer pin-box low enough to cause a downward pressure on the hitch plate when connecting. The truck may actually drop a fraction of an inch indicating there is some downward pressure on the plate. If the pin-box is even slightly off the plate during hitching, the big ring on the bottom of the kingpin may be too high to hit the trigger properly.

I second this recommendation. I inspect, clean any dirt or other accumulation off the "gears" and surfaces and then spray it with WD40 several times a year. A word of caution: Use a wooden stick to trip the hitch mechanism to the closed position before cleaning it as you could have a serious finger or hand injury if you accidentally trip the locking mechanism closed while cleaning it. This will also provide you an opportunity to observe what might be wrong with the actuating and locking parts of the hitch.

I also have a 18K. A couple of months ago I hooked up, the handle tripped, I did a pull test against my roto-chocks (grandson and wife hollering that I was sliding the trailer). I then pulled the chocks and pulled out of my space, turning SLIGHTLY to the left, the trailer came off of the hitch within 6 feet. Ruined the tailgate, and I ripped a chunk out of my seat. I have an engineering background and studied this from every angle I could, but could not identify the cause.

It's important to remember to back into the hitch with as little angle in respect to the trailer as possible. As another poster indicated, it is also good practice to exert some downward pressure on the hitch when sliding into the trailer, since this will prevent High Hitching.
Pullrite customer service is very responsive, and I would not hesitate to phone or email them with specific questions.
Regarding the poster who pulled out of the hitch -- that's pretty unsettling information. If you determine what the cause of this malfunction was, I'm sure everyone would be interested.

Yes - we would be interested!
"gmctoyman" and the OP should call customer service (and update this thread)!
BTW - there is a Bedsaver available for PR SuperGlide hitches.

Did this happen with the jaws of the hitch locked around the kingpin?
