He tells me the LEO down in Glamis are checking and citing mostly short bed 3/4 ton trucks that obviously look over loaded towing that 40 foot 5th wheel.
I know last season, there was a long exit line in Glamis for Thanksgiving and New years holidays as LEO's checked all vehicles for proper registration of the off road toys. I didn't hear anything then about tow vehicle checks.
Has anyone heard anything about tow vehicle checks??
He probably told wife that story so he could get a new truck.
Bingo. We now have the correct info.

dedmiston wrote: It's more believable to me that they would check proper licenses for that weight. That's a quicker check. Otherwise they'd have to check the axle & tire ratings and weigh the vehicle. Thosr are the only ratings they can cite for.
But good for your buddy for upgrading to a more sensible truck.
Bingo! That would be a freebie all day long. Checking to make sure that everyone had the RV endorsement and/or the the Non Com class A.

five'er wrote: I have witnesed something like this (live coverage on the morning news). In the spring or near the high times (long weekends) the police in Ontario (OPP) will set up check stops, usually at service stations off the highway in known high traffic areas (North of Toronto). They look for safe towing practices and equiptment such as functional lights, tires as well as ensuring all the laws surrounding the road are followed (loads secure, adiquate tread etc).. I have seen (live coverage on the morning news) where they have even impounded vehicles at these check stops. I am not sure if they have portable scales but I would assume they probably do. Although they may suggest they target people towing.. they will pull in ANY vehicle that may not be within the set limits.. I was pulled over once in a small older car for a "Safety check" The officer went as far as to check the floor boards after checking the lights etc.. it does happen.

I did find it hard to believe that they would cite you just by looking over-loaded. I do know that CHP use portable scales for the commercial trucks and when asked, they are more interested in the commercial trucks.
I did hear that they check for the proper license and for that reason I got my class A non-commercial. My friend with the new truck is a truck driver. I was just wondering if anyone heard anything.

skipnchar wrote: I'm also having a little difficulty seeing any viability to the story since they're concentrating on SHORT trucks? Just makes no sense since short ones have pretty much the same payload and CERTAINLY the same GVWR as long bed models. That alone would make me question the story. I wouldn't bet my last dollar on them not checking just short beds. I used to pick "one item" each day to use for traffic stops. Might be the left headlight out or a brake light or even blue Chev trucks. It was a "safety check" for which there is no PC required and what you find is unbelievable....LOL. Made more arrest this way, than any other stop/contact in my 25 years.

But your not cited until they have your weight. And there is a limit that they can make you drive to a scale.

Check the NON-Commercial RV application in California and the drives license. After looking it over the test is all most like a commercial test along with a Dr's health evaluation. Its just plain garbage any one has to be put through this nonsense to own a RV. And you never know--It could be coming to your state.
