When I'm lying in the overhead and looking at the full length of the camper I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that it's in the bed of my truck. It's kind of an optical illusion.

One way of looking at it is like having the square footage of a 19 foot travel trailer, thrust onto the top of your truck.

Exactly! I use to have a Nash 19B TT and it wasn't nearly as roomy inside as my AF 1150 is. There wasn't even a dedicated sleeping area in it. I can go more places with my truck camper than I could in that small 19' TT too, so I can't agree with Hot Rod Guy's 90% statement either. Perhaps he can go 90% of the places he use to go in his TC but when I towed a short TT I couldn't have gone 90% of the places I can go now with my TC. I have plenty of room to bring firewood if needed but the places I camp (which I wouldn't have taken my Nash btw) mother nature provides the firewood. "Short runs" are no problem with the camper on but it only takes a few minutes to take it off too.

One downside first: I wish mine was paid for, so good going for all you who own yours (any donations will be gladly accepted btw ) but here are my 5 reasons for loving it.

1. It's my Home.
2. It's nicer and has more amenities than many apartments I've wasted money renting.
3. It's mobile and always ready to go camping so that during my week off my neighbors are deer, elk, moose, bears, wolves and the fish in the lakes and rivers I camp by.
4. It's great to go see my kids and not have to rent a motel, we just go camping and fishing
5. It keeps me nice and cozy warm even when the temps are very cold.
6. Large holding tanks allow me to stay out for weeks (if only I had that much time off)
7. If it wasn't for my TC I'd have no good reason to own a dually, a diesel or even a truck at all for that matter. What a sad existence that would be, not being able to drive around a dually .
8. Camping in places like this: (I've never see anything but a TC here and probably never will unless they build a new road. Hopefully that will never happen.)

9. TC's have a cool factor that seem to mesmorize people when you pull into a gas station, parking area, or even just going down the road. I definitely get lots of looks. I think that it's most likely from them wondering how how that big old Dodge diesel dually all of a sudden looks so small and why it doesn't just crumble under that massive camper.
10. People who would never take the time to talk to you otherwise will strike up conversation based on your TC.
11. OOPS, you only wanted 5 . I think travelnuts was right, "what don't you love" would have been a much shorter list.

From a friend who has a TC, here is why one is likely my next RV purchase:

1: Almost as much space as my 25 footer with all three slides out.
2: No problems backing up your rig, assuming a good reverse camera.
3: No worries about campsite length.
4: Nothing else out there provides the off-road capability and agility that a 4x4 + a TC gives. Period. A class B is more agile on tarmac, but take it off-road in some areas, and the ground will relieve it of an axle or oil pan quickly.
5: It keeps people who want to come as "guests" away. If you have other RV types, they assume you have a spare dinette or bed. Not with a TC.

Since my original question was what people "like most" about their Truck Campers? How did the 5th Wheel Crowd hi-jack the thread? I mean this is the Truck Camper Forum right? Funny thing... I never go to the 5th Wheel Forum and tell them why I prefer a Truck Camper? Just saying...

I have gotten to where I have to check the signature to see what the poster camps in before commenting or considering their post. As far as the "I can camp anyplace you can" non-TC group. Come and join me at the north Mansfield Jetty. It is not a bad trip.

Love your thread. I have to agree with all of the reasons given. The TC is the best.

It may be kinda like that Delta stewardess told me one time, she said that most people weren't aware that 767s were equiped to land on water....... but only once.

My five reasons are

1.cheep to keep and maintain
2.no extra chassis, engine to maintain
3.I can still tow my buggy or not.
4.no extra room for relatives!
5.But most of all when the total world wide economic implosion happens I can go boondock in a place that only 1% of RV's can go.

#5 also works for zombie breakouts and when my daughters is having a slumber party. and for 3 of every 28 days
gotta go there back HELP!!!!
LOL.

1. Flexibility
2. Wife will drive
3. Camp anywhere
4. Self contained

5: No registration or inspection on Camper
4: Stealth camping
3: Dual use vehicle (Pickup without camper or RV)
.3a: This also means I can upgrade either the truck or the camper but don't HAVE to do both at the same time.
2: 4x4
1: Three point turn when the road turns into something I can't drive even with a 4x4 TC

Having had both, We'll stick with a fiver, cause....most truck campers are...12 feet tall, 8 feet wide, need a trailer to haul the extraineous stuff, can't get firewood or short runs to the places you'd like.
We can get our fiver into 90% of the places a truck camper will go, I got the truck to get firewood and run errands, seems its always me who gets these chores, cause I'm the only one with a detachab;le vehicle. I like both, have had both, just happen to like the extra room, to each their own.

One of the unacessable 10%

You couldnt even get a TT in here. The idea of owning a Travel Trailer 27' or so might tempt me, but a 5er is like dragging a house behind your truck. To damned BIG.
