I am a contract real estate appraiser who deals frequently with a couple of banks. I picked up a check the other day from one of the vice presidents and needed some cash, so I went to the teller window to cash it. This check was drawn on this bank, and it was the bank's check from their own checking account. The teller asked for a photo ID and my SS card. I told her I don't carry my SS card. Then she said I need your SS number. I told her I had been a contractor for the bank for over 20 years and nearly every bank officer there knows me well including the president and chairman of the board. She wasn't impressed. But I insisted that one of them come and approve my check, and he did. Without me handing over my SS number.

You are correct.. DMV has a right to ask, your employer, and of course the bank that is paying you interest,, But anyone else is violating Federal law just by asking.
True story: In days of old when folks were bold the SSN was often used for both insurance and School ID.. Many times I would have an SSN on a warrant hit but Mr, "Name Game" Suspect would be trying to say "That's not me".. We would ask for either his Insurance or School ID and.. Then cuff and stuff as they say.

I think that posibly, that may have been the law at one time, however the people at SS now say it is not a violation to ask for you to give your SS'n. It's kind of a catch 22 situation. Some one may ask but not require your SS'n. But if you refuse they can denie your request.

I work for an electrical contractor in So Cal. We have to apply to many cities for business licenses in order to work in that city. Almost all of them ask for owner's home address, phone number and soc sec number on their forms along with the business info. I refuse on all of them. When asked for the info, I ask "Can you guarantee security of that information and sign a letter to that effect". I have never been refused a bus license.

Is it illegal to provide a bogus SSAN if they "require" it? Just asking, I really don't know...

We had a credit card for many years at our favorite department store. Since we have been retired for three years, we have not been in that store. Recently we went there to purchase pants and our credit card was rejected. They said we had not used it for a few years so we were removed from the system. They told us we would need to apply for a new credit card which included giving them our social security number. We refused to give the number and they refused the application. Bummer... our favorite store is now history to us.

Why a SS number, drivers license number, multiple credit card number, payroll number, etc?
They should embed a barcode in everyones forehead at birth. This serves as a SS number, drivers license number, Credit/Debit transactions, Payroll and any other needs.
You could have machines in stores for reading the codes. Then have centralized points of purchase for internet type transactions - places that scan your forehead - at the same time take your mug shot and process the transaction. This process would provide automatic update of your mug shot each time you make a purchase to update as we age.
It also provide the enforcement an easier way to track an individual!
Then Uncle Sam could say "We need 10% taxes from everyone". You simply go to a service center, bang your head on the scanner and your taxes are paid. How simple?
I was trying to think of a way to incorporate this to a PC. But I could just imagine when I get to a boring page, fall asleep and my head hits the keyboard - "Cha-ching, Cha-ching".

I don't hardly use checks anymore. Just about all my bills are now on auto-pay and when I travel, I use a credit card. When I use a credit card, they SHOULD ask for ID, but they don't.
