We stayed a week at Ocean Lakes CG last year. We did not find it that outlandish cost wise considering we were only 45 feet from the water's edge. They also have a ton of stuff going on in the CG (activity wise) every day. The golf carts are constantly on the move, but we did not find it to be a nuisance. While it can be noisy all day and into the evening, we did not notice the noise at all after 10PM. WE would be going back for two weeks this year, but we promised the kids we would go see the Rat in Florida this year. I can tell you that if you walk/run the perimeter of the CG, it is a 3 mile loop. We would get up, do our daily walk/run, go set up our E-Z-Up tent on the beach to mark our spot and then go get cleaned up and head to the beach for the day. My wife would run the beach every so often and ran through PirateLand one day and said it was nice, but if you want level concrete pad for your rig, Ocean Lakes had a lot more of them. We rented a Golf Cart for the week and had a blast. Can't speak for other areas along the cost as we are still a "slave to the man" and can't really spend lots of time travelling just yet.
Mappingmom, We have never stayed at Pirateland in Myrtle Beach, but my niece and her family have stayed there a lot. She has 2 teenage daughters and 1 son. They love that campground. They stay there for a week at the time and sometimes never leave the campground. Pirateland has swimming pools, playgrounds, laundry, game rooms, lazy river, all kinds of thing to do within the park. It is not far from any of the things to do in Myrtle Beach.
We have stayed at several of the other campgrounds and found them to be great also. There is plenty of things to do and see within an hour drive for a day trip. I think you will find plenty to do in Myrtle Beach. My wife says the shopping is fun, with all the oultets and malls.
Assateague Island, MD is our FAVORITE!! No where else like it. Once there, you are spoiled and will have a hard time camping elsewhere. You are ON The beach- just over the dune. Amazing to hear crashing waves from your bed! Book early. There are a few private campgrounds nearby as well as the state park & national seashore park.

Rookie Rver here! In 2006 family and I (wife, son, and nephew) did a six week east coast beach hopping trip........LOVED IT! We left Texas headed to South Carolina. Once in South Carolina headed north and hit every beach as far north as Cape May, NJ........loved it! Myrtle Beach KOA believe it or not we give it a score of 8 1/2+, There were a couple of smaller beaches that were nice in South Carolina before Myrtle Beach too. Virginia Beach KOA was nice too but it was kind of crowed and far from the actual beach. They did have paid transportation to local places and activities. We didn't have a towed. Cape May, NJ beaches and area......WOW.
This was a good trip and we still talk about it today.....

Pirateland is our favorite MB campground. Have stayed at others, but we always go to Pirateland now. Plenty to keep you busy without even leaving the park!

For teenage boys, it will defintily be Myrtle Beach. I would stay at one of the big 3. My preferences are in this order: Lakewood, Ocean Lakes and then Pirateland. I only chose Lakewood over Ocean Lakes because we haven't stayed at Ocean Lakes. We will be though pretty soon. My preference may change.

MB KOA is nice, but it is more expensive than the big 3 and not on the ocean. But if you need to stay only one or two nights during the summer, then it's a good choice as the big 3 and many others in the area make you stay at least a minimum of 4 nights.
