Since you're starting in VA I assume you'll be going down east side of FL on I-95. I-95 and turnpike are closest together at Ft Pierce. That's where we pick up the turnpike.

Wrong, Jupiter is were the roads are the closest together. Thats were we change. Its a little further as I-95 goes west of the TPK but you save on tolls.

There is a easy in /out Pilot station at the Ft pierce exit. The turnpike is about a block south.
Order a Sunpass from the turnpike webpage. Its well worth it even for a 1 time use. It cost us about $38 each way. The turnpike is deffintly faster.
Also, fill up before you get on it. At the end in Florida City there are several stations that are lower priced than anything further south.
Its a long drive but fun.

For sure, fill up as soon as you get off at the end of the turnpike. The Shell at the corner of 1 (South Dixie) and 334th was easy access for me, but you could try the Murphy's at the Wal-Mart since I believe the price is a bit lower there, but that's a right (north) when you get off the turnpike instead of the left (south). As soon as you get on the Keys, gas prices increase and continue to increase the further onto the Keys you get.

Again, thank you all for the good recommendations on the turnpike and fuel issues. We're really looking forward to this trip.
