Sorry, misunderstood the intentions of your post. Thought you were looking for a campground with easy access to Chicago. You're looking for one 4 hours or less from Chicago ... to get away! OK, got it.

May I recommend ANY State Park in Indiana! Don't forget to check-out the Indiana State Recreation area's also. They are also run by the DNR and, in my opinion, have better campsites than the state parks.

Check out Duck Creek RV resort in Muskegon MI. It is very nice and right across the road from Michigan Adventures amusement park.

It's about 4 1/2 hrs away but we like East Harbor State Park by Port Clinton Ohio. We've been there twice and enjoyed it both times! There is many things to do and see in the area and it is just west of Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky.

Here is one you might enjoy:

Cliffside Park near Racine, WI.

Camping is $23/night with water and electric.

Things to do in the area:

  • Seven Mile Fair (3 miles)
  • Johnson Wax Bldg.(FLW)
  • Jelly Belly Factory Tours (15 miles)
