We have camped in Dan Nicolas Park near Salisbury several times. I think that there is enough to entertain your DD there as others have mentioned, but it has no pool. it is conveniently located near several race shops and not that far from Charlotte. The park does not have full hookups but nicely spaced and shaded sites.

Since you like NASCAR. The Hickory Motor Speedway could be a must see, and all of the greats ahve raced there. It is known as the "Birth Place of the NASCAR Stars". There are races every Sat night in the summer. Racing like it is supposed to be.
Also Since it will be summer, and the CG is on the lake with docks. You can rent a boat just down the road and bring it back to the CG.
I would advise against Wildlife Woods. The last time I drive through there, the roads were terrible and its mostly permanent stuff.
There is the Carowinds place others mentioned. There's a KOA in Ft Mill SC (just across the NC/SC border). There's a KOA up in Statesville off exit 45 (I-77). There is another one near the Wildlife Woods one called Cross Country. It gets halfway decent reviews, but has some permanents as well. There is also Lake Norman Motor Coach Resort. They do allow other things besides Motorcoaches. Ther eis no pool, but it is right on the lake and its a bit pricy. But its the newest and nicest one around.
There is plenty to do in the area. Feel free to send me a message. I live in the Mooresville area and work two blocks from the Hall of Fame in Charlotte.
Amazing that you would suggest the field, that is Cross Country, With it's many work campers, and camper parking spots directly on 150, or the cliff, that is Lake Norman Motorcoach Resort, also with it's "campsites" directly on HWY 150, and barely enough room to turn around in, over a nice tree filled CG, like Wildlife Woods, Well off the highway. With the large nightly rental FHU sites in their own section near the pool, and a short walk to the water. We found no bad roads in the FHU section. Also the prices are very reasonable.
Honestly. If I had to camp in Cross Country, or Lake Norman Motor Coach. I'd sell the camper. But then we all have different ideas about RVing, or camping. We camp. So we like the Lake, trees, and space.
I didn't recommend Cross Country, I said its there, but it gets decent reviews. If you compare Wildlife woods nad Cross Country, you will see that Cross Country gets an average of 3-4 points higher rating. I've stayed in neither as I live in the area. Ihave no desire to stay within 15-20 minutes of my house. LKN Motorcoach Resort is a nice place. It's modern and very clean. I've not stayed there, but there are some people who prefer that type of place. Just throwing it out there as a choice. As is LKN State Park, which is 5 minutes from my house. Can't get much more than a pop up in there or a small TT and there is no hookups at all. There is no pool or playground as well, but there is a swimming area in the lake.
Dan Nicholas is going to be about an hour from downtown Charlotte. Watch out for the copperheads in the pond there. Saw several of them there the last time I was there.
Unfortunately, there is no "great" place to go to in the Charlotte area. If you want to be close to downtown Charlotte and looking for something with ammenities for the kid, then I would recommend the KOA in Ft Mill. Never been there, but I know someone who has and has taken their grandkids and had a blast. If you are looking to get more into the NASCAR experience, then head north of Charlotte up to the Mooresville area. There's a KOA right off the highway in Statesville (exit 45). KOA's tned to have more for kids. Mooresville offers a smorgasboard of race shops, lake community, restarurants, shopping, Lazy 5 ranch, Zootastic, and more. In a couple years it will be really crowded in Mooresville during the summer time. They are building a Little League baseball park that is supposedly going to the be the largest in the nation and are expecting to bring in a lot of people during the summer time.

So I think as our plans are evolving, we might spend the first half closer to mooresville and Cornelius since DH wants to tour DEI and Michael Waltrip's shops. Maybe the Lake Norman area. I'm then thinking about heading farther south to either the Fort Mill KOA or Ebenezer Park for the remainder of the trip and the things in Charlotte we want to do. DH might go to the Nascar Hall of fame while I stay w/ DD at the CG to let her blow off some steam. We all know that you can't do too much touring w/ a 4 1/2 yr old and I'm not much of a nascar fan but DH is a really big one.
We looked at Carowinds and like it but it is really expensive, so is Lake Norman Motorcoach. Terry- I saw on RV Parkreviews, a bunch of people complained about highway noise. Is it really bad or just a little bit? I'm ok w/ low level highway noise, I just don't want it really loud. I want to be able to relax some.
Let's see now........we all want the perfect cg... and I am not sure that I have seen it yet.
With a 4-1/2 yr old, I would not pass up Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury or the Carowinds park. There is a county park right near Carowinds call McDowell Preserve. Nice place with short drive to the park. Neither of these 2 have full hookups but do have dump stations.

Thank you again for all the advice everyone.
I would be surprised if there was no complaints about road noise at Lake norman Motorcoach. 150 is a major highway, and the parking spaces are right at the road. You can drive by, look down, and see what they are eating for supper. It is probably no more than 100 yards from the road to the lake, and the parking spaces are on terraces descending like steps to the water. Not my kind of place.
I would opt for Cane Creek C/G.Its a county park over off Hy 200 just below Waxhaw,N.C..They have 2 playgrounds,a old putt putt course,a swimming area, but its in a lake, paddle boats, canoes are for rent, and fairly reasonable. Its appox. 40 min or so from downtown Charlotte. If you book now you could get a full hookup site. All the full service sites are great.Fishings great too!If you deside to eat out you pick the type of food and P/M me and I'll tell ya whats the best IMO in the area.On friday/saturday night theres a auction down in Lancaster,S.C. which is appox.10 miles from the C/G thats pretty cool too.Your DD would probley like Discovery Place in downtown Charlotte,Zuma in Pineville which is a amusement place with putt putt,or Sky High which is in Pineville too. Were appox 20 miles from Cane Creek and its one of our favorite local C/G's.

Also live in the Lake Norman area....interesting comments. It is true that the Lake Norman Motorcoach Resort is on Hwy 150, altho really don't see how the traffic would greatly impact the sites there. It is not a typical campground, out in the open, no trees but does have a lake view.
if you can do a few nights without electricity, I would recommend Lake Norman State Park. Close to all race facilities in Mooresville.
Dan Nicholas is wooded with good kid activities....great train and unique carousel within the park.
