We plan to leave the Philly area around 4 AM but the winds are gusting to 40 mph right now. The forecast for tomorrow is 20 to 30 moh with 40 mph gusts.

Would you head south on I95 with that kind of wind?

I have driven in wind at that speed many times. If you need to leave I would not hesitate but you will have to be very alert as you already are. If you are not on a deadline then I would wait until the winds die down and have a more comfortable trip. That is the way to go if possible.

Hi,

It depends on the wind direction.

If from south I'd wait

If from north I'd go

Thanks Rich for such a quick reply. Last year we had to delay 1 day because of the blizzard right after Christmas. The year before we delayed 1 day because of tvery high winds. Not sure what to do this year. The first day is difficult as it is since we drive 530 miles to our first stop. Plus getting around Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC and Richmond is always a chore. Factor in some gusting winds....might wait 1 more day. I'm keeping an eye on the hour by hour forecast.

Yes....that is a good point about the wind direction. Forecst calls for W...NW. A nice tail wind, plus heading south is "downhill". Sound like a good formula for increased MPG.

If you want some real interesting wind forecasts and observations, the National Weather Service Mesonet Observations gives real-time information State-by-State...

Winds will usually calm down at night - looks good according to NWS site .

I would leave now and do a night time run to get thru the Virginia corridor and stop below DC or better yet Richmond for a nap .

If you have to leave then I would drive it. It would make a longer trip as I would adjust my speed accordingly. If I didn't have to leave I would wait it out just to lessen the stress level.
