What alternatives can you suggest for our Splendide washer/dryer. Know we need the low suds type. Just don't want to pay the price that CW wants. Was wondering if the grocery might have something we could use.

We use Tide HE. It must say HE to use in the Splendide. That is low suds. You don't need much. I think the Splendide manual says 2 tbls.

Any detergent that is for front load washers will work. Just follow the directions from the Spendide manual that came with your machine.

I've been using HE liquid laundry soaps running 4 loads a week for four years... Whisk is my favorite. There's different strengths of HE liquid laundry soap... 2X, 3X and I just use a little less of it then. You might think that 1 Tablespoon of laundry soap can't possibly clean a load of laundry but it does. Too much and it leaves a soapy film on your clothes. I always set the machine to do the "Extra Rinse".

I do use liquid fabric softener. NEVER use dryer sheets.

The most important thing isn't the brand of soap that you use... it's putting 20-mule team borax directly into the washer along with the clothes. (1 coffee scoop full.) I have had zero gunk build up in the gasket and I have not had to use anything else to keep my machine from developing that dreaded smell.

I sold European front loading washers for years before the others came on the market and before the soap makers thought up the high profit of special types of detergents.
The only thing you need to do is to use any regular detergent you like, just use less of it!
Check your owners manual for the proper amount, usually about 1/3 the amount you would use for a top loader.

From the Splendide consumer tips web site,

"What kind of detergent/How much should I use?"

Answer: Using detergents that aren't "low-sudsing" in any front loading washer can cause excess foam which can back up inside the machine or run out onto the floor. Using less of a regular detergent can prevent excess foam, but may result in unsatisfactory cleaning. To make sure this doesn't happen, we recommend that you use only low-sudsing (sometimes called HE or "High-Efficiency") powder detergents.

Because your Splendide is highly efficient, you only need to use 1 to 2 tbsp. of a powder detergent to get laundry spotlessly clean. Using too much can cause oversudsing which can not only damage your machine, but can make clothes appear dingy.

Using liquid detergents in any front-loading washer is not recommended because they tend to produce too much foam. But, if you prefer to use a liquid detergent, DO NOT use more than 1 tbsp.

For your convenience, we offer a premium laundry detergent that's been designed specifically for high-efficiency washers and has been successfully tested in Splendide machines. 100% free of chemicals and artificial fragrances, Splendide Premium Laundry Powder is tough on stains and odors, but gentle on delicate skin, all washable fabrics, and the environment.

"What kind of fabric softener/How much should I use?"

Answer: We recommend using 1-2 tablespoons of a liquid fabric softener as needed - to reduce wrinkling and speed drying. Bio-friendly fabric softeners, or those that appear light in color, dissolve more quickly in less water and minimize build-up within your machine and in the environment. NEVER use fabric softener sheets.
