years ago we had a roof mounted dome dish made by Winegard installed on our 5er .... while it works well, looking back I wish I'd saved the money .... if there is one tree in the CG, there is no doubt it will be located between our camper and a clear view of the southern sky ... as a result we also carry a portable antenna ... over the years we've tried several and for us the VuQube 1000 has proven to be the best we have found .... I'm not a fan of tripod dish mounts but have found that using a Winegard Carryout Tripod Mount to be very dependable .... using it gets our VuQube off the ground and when properly tied down it has ridden out some very strong winds .... we've had both Dish and Direct, both will deliver a signal .... of the two we have settled on Direct, for us it is simpler and has excellent national coverage

For manual set up:
If you are ok with SD, go Direct. Easier set up than Dish SD.
If you want HD, go DISH. Easier set up and more channels than Direct HD.
I currently have Dish HD and have a portable homemade support made from PVC which to me is easier to set-up than a tri pod. Takes me about 10 minutes.

Just want to apologize for upsetting some by posting twice on this subject. We are new at this and I'm sure will make many mistakes. Thanks to everyone who responded with advice.

We like our VuCube also...we tried the tripod type for a while...but a lot easier to throw the cube on the roof, so there's no trees in the way, then go sit in my chair and tune in the sat.....much nicer from the comfort of the easy chair...of course auto tune would be even better!!

We just saw a new Tailgater in the RV dealer parts store. Looks exactly like a VuCube. It claims to get Direct TV HD? I was under the impression that the Winegard Auto Carryout was the only carryout that got HD and only on Dish Network.
Any experience with this unit?

The tailgater is only used for the dish network.. Yes it is very easy and fast to setup.. You can find the tailgater for $350 or so on line.. This is the way to go in my opinion....

We have the Wingard automatic. It works fine with Dish Network. We are receiving three Satellites for our programing. We have only used it in Texas so I don't know how it works in Idaho but I suspect it will be fine. All it requires is a view of the Southern sky. If you have an I-phone, there is a wonderful little application that lets you easily find the sattelites. I use it to make sure there are no obstructions between the dish and the satellites. From then on the automatic dish automatically rotates and elevates until it locks onto the 3 birds. When you change channels it sometime has to move slightly to peak onto the propert satellite but that is done automatically. So far we like ours.

I use Dish HD on a tripod. Takes about 5 minutes or less to set up. Over Christmas...way too many trees around so I set the Dish up away from the 5ver and had it dialed in about 2 minutes.
