If you're a history buff, do the Ft Sumter tour, perhaps Patriots Point, Ft Moultrie, the Market and walk downtown and see the old homes, The Battery. Plenty of great dining. Never been to Folley Beach so can't help there. The fine folks at the campground will have some great info.

Staying at James Island also gives you access to ALL Charleston County Parks, Including the pier at Folly. Just show them your site tag.
As for things to do. How much time you got? You can go to Boone Hall Plantation, (Highly Recommended) Sullivan's Island, Battery Park. Patriots Point, Fort Sumter, Ghost walks, Carriage Rides, aquarium, The Market, The fountain, Bubba Gumps, Charlestown Landing, The Hunley. There is more to do there, than you can do in 3 weeks. Including all the activities at the CG.
DW just likes to walk around Charleston admiring the houses, and gardens, and dream of what it was back in the day. She is a true Southern Belle.
BTW. We hasve only been to the beach once when there. There just isn't time. It's not real close to the CG. Had lunch on the pier, a real treat.
We ate @ Jestines, Sticky Fingers, Noisy Oyster ( don't think there's a bad restaurant there)Hymans supposed to be good also. Ft. Sumpter tour good as is Patriots Point and Cypress Gardens Of So. Carolina. Walking downtown and architecture (rainbow row, battery, market area) all very nice. Folly Beach good, very large ocean fishing pier nice to visit and parking is free with your campground pass @ both. In downtown Charleston park @ visitor center deck and ride free trolleys around town. James Island excellent miles of paved bike paths.

I was there last year. Folly Beach was closed but the gate was open and there were several others on the beach....oh yes, no one there to collect fees.
I didn't see anything that said I shouldn't be there.
Have fun, JICP is a great location to see Charleston from. You can access the beach at Folly Beach. Try Hyman's downtown for fabulous seafood or any other of 14dozen places that are good. The History alone in Charleston will keep you busy. That time of year the Azaelas will still be in bloom.
WOW, sounds like we are going to have plenty to do, we will only be there 1 week so I am sure we will have to go back. Thanks again for all of the info.

BTW. The Ghost walks are at night. You learn a lot of REAL history on them. Worth the walk just for the lession.
All the suggestions here have been good. The recommendations I would add would be check out the Angel Oak on John's Island. The Charleston museum is good. It's fee includes admission to 2 historical houses. For fabulous off the boat fried seafood and oyster roasts, try Bowen's Island Restaurant on the way to Folly. It is a dive, but it is really good. Finally, check local websites like sciway and discover SC for events. There are always events and festivals in the Charleston area.

Angel oak was quite spectacular but I am not buying the "purported age". Still a one of a kind specimen. This is me beside it and I am a big guy.
