No way would I do that. My suggestion would be go to a CG that has trailers that they rent. Look how nasty they look. That might help you make a decision quicker. Now I know those are used much more, but still yet, anytime something is a rental it is going to depreciate faster.

I guess it is all in how we look at our campers. Mine is my treasured toy, I take very good care of it, and never even loan it to the closest of family members. I'd loan them my car before my TT.

Some years ago my uncle (a insurance agent) bought several used Winnbago MHs just to rent. He wanted to establish a business to get some cash flow when the insurance business was a bit light.

I remember he told me that it was a 1 to 1 business - for each week a unit was rented out it took him a week clean up and to make the necessary repairs to get the unit ready for the next rental. He did achieve the increase in cash flow however - all the cash that came in went out to pay the insurance, mortgage, and repair costs. Cleaning did not cost him anything however as he did that himself and did charge for his time/labor/supplies.

He did not have any problems taking the Finance Charge, Taxes, Deprecation as business loss on his tax return however. Note that renting out your unit occasional may not generate a tax break - make sue you get professional tax advice before taking tax deductions the IRS may not agree that you are running a business.

After a year or so he decided that this was not so good an idea. Can you guess the problems in selling a used rental unit that had a large loan balance against it?

I am actually trying to convince my DW that we should rent out our 5th wheel. I have a buddy who has a business renting trailers to the film industry when they do filmng on location. He has hair and make-up trailers and office trailers but occaisionally they need a star trailer. I could rent our 5ver for that. My cut would probably be $400 for the trailer per day plus $300 for delivering and picking it up. It was very common in the 1990's to rent your RV to the film industry in Toronto when it was booming.

Thanks

As mentioned the insurance can be a problem. Your regular RV insurance policy will probably not cover rentals. So you will have to get a commercial policy at much higher rates. And not every company will write this kind of policy.

Even if you can find a company to write the policy you need to get a high liability limit, which will probably cost more money.

If something happens, even in a travel trailer that is parked, you will be facing the possibility of a civil law suit for the losses. And this won't just be the renter but could be some other person.

There are several possible liability exposures. What if someone gets seriously injured? There could be huge medical bills. What if your renter happens to start a fire in your RV? You often see pictures of RVs that catch on fire and the fire spreads to the other RVs parked next to them. You better hope it is a low value RV and not a half million or $1,000,000 motorhome.

There are other examples that could be used.

I would rent mine out. You insure it. You could have unlimited mileage and use all for 250K nonrefundable cash up front. Have fun and bring it back when your done. That is as simple as I can make it.

Several years ago, I loaned my class "C" to my best friend for 2 wks. We were really close friends I was certain.

Upon return my MH was pretty much trashed. Needed new mufflers, complete tune-up, valve job and 6 new tires from bruising & running at low pressure.

No investment- no care? End of a questionable friendship for certain.

I can maybe see the new mufflers, if they were physically damaged, no way was the tune-up his fault, or the valve job. If you checked the tire pressure before he borrowed it, unless he deflated the tires how are they going to run low in that amount of time?

No way I'd ever rent mine out. Too much liability, inconvenience and risk.

Our trailer is currently rented out to some friends.

However, it is only parked at their house while they are doing a bones out remodel. I pulled it there and set it up and they are living in it while doing the work. I have been by a couple of times to check on things and all is OK so far.

It feels good to be helping out someone and the minimal rental cost is going into a fund for some needed upgrades.

As to letting someone borrow it for a trip, I would be very hard to convince due to the added risk with an inexperienced driver towing my "beach house"
