I had the same problem, could smell YOU-KNOW-WHAT, but it was 20 years old so I just replaced it with a Thetford-Aqua low profile. Cost was 140.00 delivered to my house. It works great and flushes great and NO " YOU-KNOW-WHAT-SMELL. Just replace it and save Quarters for the real things you need
.
Yea! I passed both test's.
The first one is the seals on the toilet which i ended up relacing myself and saving probably $125. Now it holds water.
As far as the second test, the angiogram, I passed that one also. I took a nucular-stress and it was the one that came back abnormal. The Doc. said that there was a 70% blockage in the artery in back of the heart and needed to do the angiogram to confirm it and install a stent (i already have 5 of them)if needed. I go back to him in 2 weeks to discuss the test results. I definatly will ask why that test cane back abnornal when it wasn't.
Anyway all's well.
Thanks again for all your well-wishes.

I wonder what you guys are talking about "The Groove" I've changed more than one seal on a therford toilet, and there ain't no "GROOVE" !!
If there was a groove, it would get paper stuck everytime you flush. The slide just slides across the bottom of the seal,...spring pressure holding it up against it.
??????????????? Come on,...whos kiddin who ??

We have had this problem come and go a number of times.
Now I just pour a pail of hot water and laundry detergent in the bowl, let it soak for a couple of mnutes and then quickly pump the pedal a couple of times to empty. It seems to clean and lubricate the seal.
Since there apparently is no permanent solution I go with a simple approach that seems to work.
And since I am a fan of the geo system, I am going to be mixing up the soap solution anyway. I just don't pour the solution straight down the drain anymore. It's worth a try.

That's actually from Thetford faq What do I do if my toilet bowl doesn't hold water?
Pretty much every Thetford built between 1958 and the introduction of the AMIII used the same design, which has a blade riding in a groove.
The last to use that was the Aurora.
