There's a simple fix to that. Make reservations ahead of time.
That would be real easy if we were repetitive RVers who go to the same CGs & are very familiar with them.
We are not. We are more like nomads. We don't really know where we are going till we are there. We do try to be 'there' by mid afternoon on a travel day. That helps with getting an appropiate site. Not wanting FHUs helps too. On weekends we try to be 'there' Friday afternoon, before the rush of local weekenders.
So, for the regular weekender reservations for a specific site are pretty easy & the thing to do. For the nomadic drifter with a very loose plan, planning is not so easy.
.......Just to make sure I'm getting The Rules straight:
Every RVer, everywhere, must be mindful of the possibility that delightfully footloose folks like you might arrive with the expectation that YOU needn't guarantee yourself a convenient space because other, "lesser" rigs will be made to stand aside for yours.
Gotta get me one of them 40 ft. rigs...own the road, and the campgrounds, too!

In 5 years of traveling, spending 5 months each year on the road, seldom going to the same CG twice, I don't think we have made reservations 10 times. All of those times were at a high demand CG like Tek in Denali or a known high demand CG for a holiday weekend.

You have got to be kidding me? The CG's should tell faithful and loyal customers they cannot have a spot on the off chance that you might float in last minute and want one?
You have a huge RV AND you don't make plans ahead of time for your trips. But yet you think you are supposed to always be entitled to a spot and screw those folks who DO make plans ahead of time and who have a smaller RV than you...did I get all that right? Oh wait, I forgot the part where you are going to high demand CG's, and STILL think you are going to get a spot for a 40 footer at the last minute? I can't believe anybody, even someone with a smaller TT, could honestly believe they are entitled to a spot at high demand CG's at the last minute, much less a person with a huge rig.
Methinks maybe you should trade down and get a tent since you like to fly in last minute at places that sound like they fill up fast.
I was once told "Never argue with a fool, for he has far more experience at it than you & will quickly drag you down to his level." A simple, very general, opinion brings all kinds of jealous spiteful hairsplitting responses. Good grief! You guys are right. Where is the popcorn? Must be a tough winter in Arkansas.

Sort of sums up how you feel when somebody gets "your" spot, eh?
P.S.
I was once told "It's a lot of fun to argue with a fool, since they'll keep giving you more and more to work with!"
Going a l-o-n-g way back towards the original post, here's the question I've puzzled with as I get older.... Are people & society getting less thoughtful, more ignorant, less polite, more rude as time goes on? Or, is it just my perspective as I age? I'm beginning to think it's the latter. Once in a while I catch myself making complaints that I used to hear from "the old folks". And, sometimes I've met some extremely thoughtful and polite young people. But then, I see all these A-Hat actions by people that get me back to thinking the world is falling apart. Can anybody answer this one?
Generally speaking you're getting older. It seems that as one gets "old" one puts up with less and is bothered by smaller things (my mom sure fits that category). However, as the population grows and there are more and more people in the same space more problems occur. And, since there are more and more people you don't tend to know those around you as much. It's easy to get to know all of your 100 customers/neighbors. Getting to know all of your 10,000 customers/neighbors is a lot harder.
And I've seen all types. Polite and rude, young and old.
Just an aside, but a new cracker barrel opened near us with absolutely no rv parking. The lot is so poorly designed it would be hard to get any rig in and able to get out even if the lot was only 1/3 full.
Idiots.
