We have/had a Tiffin RED and trading it in for a Phaeton. I guess this is because of a safety issue but.....
It use to be on coaches(Monacos)we have owned before, that we would pull in front of the house, have the step switch on, open the door real quick and close it, turn the entry switch off, wait a sec and open the door. The steps would stay IN. The reason to do this is because of the curb.
Now in the RED and all Tiffins I think now. You can NOT have the steps remain in. Parked I mean. Of corse they will come and stay in at key turn on.
I did hear of someone using a small magnet to fool the steps into thinking the door screen door is shut.
Anyone else have any ideas or familier with this problem?
Thanks all.
Don

Your Monaco was wired just like the Tiffin. ALL steps IF wires to specs will do as you have the problem with. It is called LAST OUT. That is to keep someone from falling on their BUTT when they open the door regardless of the position of the wall switch or key switch. EVEN with the KEY ON, the steps will extend because of the override system. The BEST way to stop the steps from extending when next to a curb is to run an inside switch from the POWER supply wire at the step and that kills the power to the step to keep from extending. Doug

That sounds like a real convoluted system and safety issue. My older Winnebago and my current Newmar have a power switch for the steps that will allow me the option of having the steps open or stay closed when the door is opened. Are you sure there isn't something similar on your coach. Having said that both of my coaches were/are gassers.

I have a similar issue with the sidewalk when I park in front of the house. There's seems to be one exact spot in the street along the curb that if I hit it right, the steps will clear the sidewalk. I got fed up going forward and backing up to find the street's sweet spot so now I just pull up, put the jacks down and raise the right side a little.

My old '94 Tiffin had a oem override switch right by the entry. You could switch to lock it in, or lock it out, or open and close with door. Guess they did away with that?
I remember some discussion concerning this topic over at www.tiffinrvnetwork.com along with some modifications you could do to make it work the way I described above. One would think that the step manufacturers would build in a safety device that would return the step to the closed position if it hits anything (like a garage door), along with a flashing red light to warn the person exiting the coach. But we all know about added cost factors and the bean counters.

Yes this is considered a safety feature by the manufacture Kwikee. The steps also should stop going down when they hit something like a curb.

Our last Monaco was an 06 Dip and it was the same as all the rest. Could leave it in.

Your systems were not wired correctly. Yes, I work for a Newmar dealer. ALL, if wired correctly, will have the LAST OUT regardless of the wall switch. The ONLY exceptions are steps that are powered by the COACH batteries and subject to the coach battery disconnect. IF the door is closed and you turn off the coach battery disconnect, since there is NO power to the step, it will stay wherever it is. Doug
