The State Park at Huntsville is nice - but fills up on weekends.

Don't know of an RV Park, but Huntsville SP is about an hour north of Houston and Cagle Recreation Area is Conroe, along the north end of Lake Conroe.

Cagle is west of New Waverly and very nice. It's much like a state park but belongs to the National Forest Service.

It's been years, but we would meet our kids half way at N. Houston KOA near Lake Conroe. It was Havens Landing??? back then. Nice place, but I don't have a clue what KOA has done to it. Rayford Crossing is our destination next time we're in the area. Huntsville SP was tight unless they've reworked the camping area. Our setup when we camped was a suburban with 24' TT.

What is "just north of Houston" for you? Depending on what you are looking for, along I-45 that could be 12 miles out from the city center, or more than 40 miles. I've been driving I-45 into Houston for medical care the past three years, and for me "just north" would be at least 30 miles out.
Spring is just north of the city limits. Huntsville is well north of the urban sprawl, but it is closing in fast. In between, there are a number of nice RV parks around Lake Conroe, no longer out of the sprawl but still near the edge of it.
For the little additional time it takes to get in, compared to starting at Conroe, I would look at some of the long-term RV parks out toward Trinity.

Be very wary of rayford crossing. It is a nice place, but very difficult to get to and once there watch out for the grounds maintanance folks. Using a weed eater they threw rocks against our coach and chipped the paint on one bin door very badly. When I complained to the management (owners) they said not their problem. When I kept wanting some resolution they ordered me off their property. Our traveling friends and their motor home were also ordered off. Very nasty people.
