Comfort Drive, in laymen's terms, is a super-power steering device. You can steer a 50K lb. motorhome with one finger and no effort! But, it's more than that. It is constantly calibrating road conditions so that it automatically adjusts to wind and the crown of the road. That means you do not have to keep pressure on the steering wheel to keep the motorhome from drifting away from the crown of the road or the wind.

The calibrations are what really makes it a pleasure to drive down the highway. You can notice strong wind gusts, but nothing like regular steering. The steering wheel will be slightly turned to the left to compensate for road crown. This enables you to basically steer with one hand. I can actually drive 10 or 12 hours in a day if I want and not be worn out and my neck and back killing me!

It's funny, when we unhook the car, it feels like the power steering has gone out! The motorhome is that much easier to drive than the car. Same thing when we stop and get out on a windy day--It's like Whoa! I didn't realize there was a 30 or 40 mile crosswind!

It truly is incredible. I don't know how expensive it is since it's never been an option, but I know they bring big premiums over the Newmars that don't have it. I'm betting it's around $10K-$15K new. It can't be retrofitted. However, it's hard to put a price on the enjoyment and comfort you experience going down the road. Lee

So if you are somewhat handicapped and can only use one hand for driving, this would be the steering system (Newmar) to have?

Everything that has been said about the Comfort Drive is true! We test drove a 2012 43' Dutch Star this past Saturday. We were passed impressed! And as it was said, once you test drive one you won't want anything else! We had a 43' Country Coach when we full timed a few years ago that was easy to drive, but it couldn't compare to the Newmar with the Comfort Drive and the test coach wasn't loaded. Driving with one hand was easy. I had not driven a big Class A in 5 years and it usually takes a while to get used to a new coach and keep it in the center of the lane. But that coach stayed in the middle of the lane with no wandering at all. We're headed back to full timing, going to trade in our 5th wheel and truck and we'll have a Newmar Dutch Star in the near future!

We purchased a 2003 Mountain Aire Diesel Pusher (MADP) back in 2006 with 28K or 29K miles, fast forward to 2012 and 56K miles and it has been the best rv we ever owned (TT's and a 35' gas M/H before) Inspect the one you want very good and as long as it a quality built coach and not abused I cannot believe you will be sorry. I hope this helps, Bill
