It's sort of a complex and involved process...especially if you are planning on DIY fuel.

Start here.....and then there's several hundred videos on the "how to" part!

I think I would consider the difference between the savings of making and burning cooking oil as a fuel compared to the cost of my diesel engine. It makes commercial fuel pretty reasonable..IMO.

First,
Do you have a good source for used veggie oil?
The days of pulling up behind restaurants and getting their used cooking oil are over..

What ever DP you have, the manufacturer will stipulate no more than a percentage, not ever 100%. Plus you can end up with some serious injector issues that can run into the many thousands of dollars.

I've been using the dieselsecret method for 5 years on my 1996 Dodge 5.9L Cummins with no problems, using recycled canola oil. NOTE: Not all engines will run smoothly on french fry oil, but the early model Cummins, TDI volkswagons, and Mercedes seem to love this stuff. Check out www.dieselsecret.com and listen to the audio interview, yes, Chuck is a friend of mine. I've had no problem with suppliers (chip trucks, restaurants). Here's a link to my refinery

A couple of guys make it just up the street from my LBI home. I hope you don't travel far as you are pretty much limited by your tank capacity x mileage.

This is completely untrue. After 1/1/12 the $1.00 tax credit has been discontinued, therefore the resturants are back having to pay to have the stuff hauled out. Also someone said not to get very far from home, well I have a range of over 3500 miles before I need to refill which can be done in every state of the union (even Hawaii)from a network of people. Talk to the people that have done it, not to the all knowing people that have just heard rumors. 85,000 miles on veggi and not sorry.

A range of 3500 miles before you have to refuel? A veggie driven Prius diesel pusher?

I hold 1200 gallons in my current RV, but my DP only held 170 as I recall so my range was somewhat less than your 3500 miles (although my current RV can do that).
