Tried Donut Hole restaurant for breakfast per this forum, not that great and expensive. My background is 42 years in the hotel/restaurant industry but I am not a food snob.

Back Porch Restaurant shrimp are to die for

You should try the baked ovysters...had some sort of crab stuffing and then cheese melted on top...Also the amberjack fish was excellent!

Great place to be in October. Terrific beach, great surf fishing, swimming or just sun bathing. Fires allowed, off ground. Plenty of biking trails. The Navy mueseum is a long drive with little kids but a great place to visit. Plenty of restaurants to choose from. We have already booked for next October.Summer in Florida is hot and humid with plenty of bugs. Ocean breeze may help but be prepared. For me: One of Floridas best.

Some of the most fun we had at Top Sail was to drive down the highway to the nearby fish market and buy things to put on the BBQ. The owner will advise you what to buy. We also had fun driving up to Destin and eating at the Irish Pub. The gal working the camp store knows everything about the area and will guide you to the best spots. Go to her church on Sunday for the best entertainment in the area. Local musicians from the bars perform there and the place rocks out. Do the unconventional. After church they all go to a bar for lunch and more music.

What are the "must do" things in the area in your opinion? We love outdoorsy stuff and usually avoid touristy mini-golf type things. My kids will be almost 5 and 8.

I've done research to the point I know there will be a large mass of water to swim in...

I noticed the sites don't have fire pits. Coming from Michigan, camping ALWAYS has included a campfire. Is it just that hot that no one wants a fire during the summer in Florida?

We like Topsail...and just down the road on the right is ELMO'S...great little bar...looks a little ratty from the outside but the food is as good as anywhere else or better....great gumbo..great....and oysters on the 1/2 shell....good price....
We live in the V.I. in the winter and this is a place you'd expect to find alond a deserted beach someplace...give it a try...Chuck

If you love outdoorsy stuff why would you be staying at Topsail Hill SP? Florida has much better camping places. I love Florida state park camping and Topsail Hill is the one place I didn't like. I hate the RV resort type camping

That was helpful.

Yes it is helpful. I was influenced by all the exceedingly enthusiastic posts about Topsail, went there for 5 days and did not like it.
I like nature oriented parks with trails etc. Topsail is just a large parking lot close to a nice beach.
I prefer Port St Joe because there is much more to do than just the beach.

Topsail is for people who care about FHU and cable TV and don't mind camping close to 500 other campers.

Not every cg or "rv resort" can be the right fit for everyone. We leave FL. early spring and don't go back until sometime in November. We spend the last two weeks of October at Topsail. Very relaxing after so many months and miles visiting so many beautiful places in America. For us Topsail is perfect. AND Florida is the only place to be during the winter months, especially St Petersburg south. But then again, not for everyone.

Although it was very hot and muggy, we hiked a couple times and the park's rangers were happy to answer my kids questions about some of the things they encountered. It wasn't as naturesque as our second part of the trip at Big Lagoon SP, but it sure wasn't repulsive. IMO, take away the pool, shuffleboard, and FHU and you have an ordinary state park. The sites had tons of beautiful vegetation between them and I didn't feel like we were cramped. In fact, the sites at Big Lagoon were more difficult to maneuver and were tighter.

For the most part we spent our time at the beach so it didn't really matter. Thanks to everyone, our trip was a success!
