You won't be sorry going it alone. Being from WY I am somewhat of a Maverick. I always seem to headed the opposite direction the herd is going.

If you are an outgoing type of personality you will meet many along the way. Everyone going up that highway is on the same mission. Some have done it before. For some it is the first time. You will leap frog people you met. They will jump you. You may arrange to meet somewhere or maybe just go out for dinner.

We have done it twice,2008, 2011 & will do it again if we can. There is something addictive about the place.

Hope to see you down the road. This will be our 6th trip (on our own) to Alaska. We will be leaving mid-May (had to fix this; I said mid-June but that ain't so) and returning mid-Septemberish.

While Alaska is big, there are not that many drivable roads so maybe we will cross paths. Look for us and a hyper GSP (German Shorthair Pointer) named Abigail!

P.S. I have had a devil of the time trying to post part of message in color! Never could make it work.

Good for you! We are going on our own too. About the middle of March we should get a headcount or "road call" to see how many Forum members will be going and some identifying characteristics (assuming you want to be identified). We plan to leave the first week of June from Western NC. lizzie

Super! I think there are some folks from Ala and East TN going too. We had this same situation with fuel costs when we went to Newfoundland in 2008. We just decided to eat less and keep going. Shrunk our waistlines and expanded our horizons. Hope we meet up along the way. lizzie

Yes, 2008 was the one time there was as big an increase in gas prices as there is now. We had planned to go to Alaska from Tennessee via the UP of Michigan and across US 2. The gas was so expensive in the UP that we decided to stay in the lower 48 and ended going to Canada and Alaska in 2009. What a great time we had.

We plan on going back, hopefully this summer. Gas is and will be expensive for certain but I just checked some prices on Gasbuddy.com. The prices in Fairbanks, Anchorage and even Haines were cheaper than the prices in Florida and especially than those in California. Now Canada is a different story and the travel distances are long, but there is no time like the present.

You will save money but probably miss much of the reason for hooking up with the caravan in the first place. They know the territory better than anyone and have planned the caravan to be the most efficient use of time and miles.

What we missed on our 2009 solo trip to Alaska was what we wanted to miss. And what we saw and did was what we wanted to see and do. And we did not waste time waiting for others. They may have had to wait for us.
We ended up having to spend 4 extra days in Anchorage because of DW having some unexpected medical problems.
