We've stayed at several and "only" at a camp in Fl were we charged for that.
We are presently at a camp in Fl that is about the best we've found for free stuff, from the beer at dances and events to free ice when we need it. The little things they do are those we remeber the most when folks ask.
This CG charges 625 mo with a 50 dollar electric credit!

It must be time to go, the suns out and I've got a full tank of diesel! Lifes short enough without bitch'n about it!
Oh, I really doubt the State of Florida had anything to do with it.
It would be better if they just 'built in' the charge to the total bill, than nobody would gripe about it.
Just like the airline baggage charge. Just go up $15 on your ticket prices and nobody says a thing, but itemize the rip-off charges and it's in everybody's face, and gives us something to complain about!
Can't build in a fee in most states. Most states do not allow RV parks or Mobile home parks, or marinas or storage facilities etc. where they pass on metered electricity costs to charge more than the rate they pay. Charging extra is illegal. Believe it or not, billing for electricity costs the park money. They have to read the meter, prepare and calculate the bill and most importantly, keep very accurate records for the state. These same people who say "let me read it, you can trust me." are the same people who worry the most about people ripping them off. They don't want to leave their credit card at the fuel stop desk while filling their tanks, don't give the park their phone number or license plate number on their rig. Apparently everyone is dishonest except when reading electric meters. Most states do allow for a reading and billing fee. To paraphrase another post "If you don't like it, don't stay there."

Oh yes you can.
Somewhere --- Some way --- you can build in a fee.
Build it in to the base monthly charge to stay there. Certainly a park owner wouldn't be foolish enough to call it a built-in meter reading fee, but it CAN be built in SOMEWHERE!

Very true, and a good example is the so called "resort fee" being charged by most resorts on the east coast. Nothing more than a way to gouge the customer and put more money in the resort owners pocket, nothing to do with any state, county or city fees.

We also stay in Arizona and the $8.50 charge here goes to the power company NOT to the resort. I assume that is the case at most parks in most states. Before you lay blame be sure you know where the extra charge goes.

No person is completely worthless ..... one can always serve as a bad example.

One can only lay blame where based on what we are told in the park office. When I am told it is a "reading fee" and the bill is from the park on their letterhead, it is perfectly reasonable to figure it is a park fee. Maybe your park makes things more clear to their guests.
Upon a little research at other parks in town, they do not charge this fee, so either they include it in the rent to send to the power company, or the park is making $8.50 for each site to read the meter. Either way, guests should know about it when they check in.

I think not knowing was the most annoying. A notice should have been posted in a prominant place in the office advising of this fee or should have been in the handout provided when we checked in. They certainly did not hesitate to advise us we had to pay extra for cable and WIFI.
As far as a Resort fee goes, this is the norm at Encore and Sun RV properties. It is usually in their ads (in small print) and also on their coupons/special deals.

I had the clerk stop and help the people in line behind me while I consulted my trip sheet . When she finished , I let them know that I would be staying elsewhere . It was not the dollar amount , but the lack of integrity by not disclosing the additional fees .
Campgrounds , through their lack of behavior and ethics , will put themselves out of business .
Especially if you name the campground or resort. People will think twice before booking there.

We DID NOT know about this meter reading charge. It was our first time (and last) at this park and we have never run across this before.
If you are not told about it, how are you suppose to know. It is our experience that this is not the norm.
This park also did not inform motorhome owners that they cannot get their propane tanks filled in the park. They like to keep their secrets to themselves and let you find things out after the fact and at your inconvenience.
