We are planning on spending some time in Couer d'Alene this summer. What can you tell me about the bicycle trails in the area? Terrain? Access? Not serious bikers here, just casual riders. Thanks for your input - by the way - I am a NJ flatlander - legs don't like big hills

No but there is a neat one, back track for a day trip to the border with Montana on I90 a gravity ride over old railroad right of way. Tunnels and trestles and for a few bucks you can catch a bus to take you back to the top.

The Centennial Trail is a paved bicycling/walking trail that covers over 50 miles from east of Coeur d'Alene, Id. to west of Spokane, Wa. The trail follows the Spokane River and Lake Coeur d'Alene for the most part, is very scenic and a fairly easy ride.
OP here - follow up ???? We have a friend flying in to join us while in Couer d'Alene - anyone know if there are bike rentals available? I'm guessing yes - any further info appreciated.

I think John Wayne may be talking about the Hiawatha Trail. We've never done it but it is on our list of rides to do. We find old railroad grades ideal for riding, as the grade is limited for trains. They do have rental bikes available. Hopefully someone else will chime in here that has done the ride.
4runnerguy that's the one I was talking about. As I recall you need to pay a fee to ride the trail. I rented all I needed ( bike , Helmet, flashlight the 1st tunnel is like a mile long) at a ski area on the way to the trail head.
O.K. Now I can answer a topic with true knowledge!!!!
Trail of the Coeur d Alene's is 72 miles of the finest asphalt anywhere! I think it only has a couple road crossings, and at least 40 miles are as flat as can be. Beautiful rivers and lakes are alongside as you ride.
North Idaho Centennial Trail runs from East of Coeur d Alene to West of Spokane Washington. Paved, fun, scenery, places to eat, and did I say fun? It's about 50 miles in length.
If you access the web and search the Trails of the Coeur d Alene's, it will link you with all the others in the area, including the Haiwatha Trail.
Us North Idaho folk are blessed with some of the best bike riding in all the U.S. I know that sounds snobish, but it really is true. Mt. bike or road riding--if ya aint rid here, yo misn out!
See ya out here, I'll be on a red Felt or Kona, or Trek, and weezing.
I have ridden the Hiawatha several times. It is an easy enjoyable ride down slope with awesome views. take a good flashlight...the tunnels are long and very dark. I have also ridden back up slope. Not tough if you've done any riding prior to the ride. This is a very nice ride for riders of any ability. well worth the few bucks to ride. check out the website for details.
