We are in planning stages of a trip starting in October from Bullhead City to Florida and beyond.
Since it will be approaching winter we will probably stay close to the 10 fwy to avoid alot of nasty weather.
Time is on our side and we only need to be in Tunica, MS for Christmas and we do travel slowly.
My question is for southern Texas. Is there a route you prefer that will avoid San Antonio and Houston (especially Houston. We have been thru these towns before so....been there done that.
We don't drive more than 200 miles in a day so a route with some nice places to stop would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any of your suggestions.
Janet

Depending on how far south in Texas you want to travel, you could take 277 south from I-10, and then go across to the Corpus Christi area. This is assuming that you want to sight-see in the Texas area. From there, you could go up toward Bay City, and then over to the southern tip of Galveston Island, up the island to the Port Bolivar Ferry, and across on the ferry to Port Bolivar, up to Winnie, and then pick up I-10 again. If you don't want to go that far south, you can take Hwy. 46 just north of San Antonio, and then head southeast to the southern tip of Galveston Island, or even I-45 direct to Galveston, and then across via the ferry. In any event, San Antonio is less of a concern than Houston is. I avoid Houston at all costs, and always take the Island route.

I also like to avoid the big cities, so if you like the countryside, you might want to try taking Hwy. 90 southeast from I-10 and then go south into Big Bend National Park. You can then continue southeast on Hwy. 90 toward the Del Rio area, and then east toward Goliad State Park. Nice campground and LOTS of Texas history there. Further southeast to Corpus Christi (camp on the beach at the Padre Island National Seashore), Port Aransas and Mustang Island, Rockport/Fulton, and up to Port Lavaca. All beautiful areas, and October/November is a nice time to be in those areas. Once you get back on I-10 near Winnie, Texas, plan to stay a while in the Lafayette/Breaux Bridge area of Louisiana and enjoy the Cajun music and food there.

You could pick up US190 off of I-10 east of Ft. Stockton and follow it across to Baton Rouge, La.

We will be coming from the west and yes we do want to sightsee. We travel slow. We mainly want to avoid the big cities like Houston.
Time is on our side.
Thanks for your help

From I10 we go to Galveston Island via Winnie and take the ferry, then I45-N to FM 2004, then Texas 35 south, but you can go north also. Wonderful route, no traffic, good roads, and plenty of fuel stops. You can PM us if want more information. We are wintering in Rockport, TX now.
