Oh, wait, one more question...I don't remember a lane. I was on the highway and there was a booth. I pulled up and they just waved me through. Do you mean a lane at 21KM or at the boarder? Which seemed to me to be the US station...but it has been two years since I crossed.

Jim: When you get to 21 there are signs indicating that you must stay to the right and stop to return any permits. I don't stop there so do not pay too much attention but it is (was) very clear. I think they come out and scan your hologram. But it has been years since I had to return any permits so the method may have changed. THere is lots of room to stop your rig.

OK, great, and thanks, moisheh. I'll be looking for that at KM 21 then.
What were those other folks in this tread talking about when they referred to a refund of their TIP?
Quote: We crossed the border on Wed the 7th and the refund for my TIP was credited back to my card along with the foreign transaction fee this morning Sat the 10th.

As of sometime in June of this year (2012) Mexico requires a deposit of $400, $300, or $200, depending upon the year of your pickup or car, and maybe some other vehicles. The deposit is in US $ and may be paid in cash or credit card. There was great knashing of teeth and much sweating going on on this and other forums about whether the deposit would be returned in a timly manner. The deposit is NOT required on RVs. The deposit is in addition to the fee for the TIP.

Mexico -was-supposed to adopt NAFTA rules for automobiles but they didn't. The USA -was- supposed to let inspected and verified Mexican trucks to cross the border and deliver direct. We didn't. Mexican motor vehicles cost a LOT more than US vehicles for a reason. That reason is the same why a Mexican land line telephone costs a thousand dollars to have it installed within your lifetime. Our business and corporations have taken a huge hit because of a lack of ethics. Unchecked it will end up looking and functioning much like.......Mexico.

Crossed on Saturday and refund showed up on following Wed. Interesting - if I read my state correctly - I paid $300 US but the refund was for $330 so it must be exchange rate? Then they had charged an international transfer fee of $10 and refunded that also. We entered at Nogales (Mariposa) and left through Laredo (Columbia) so there may have been some delay because of that - the refund said it came from Nogales.

Chris: Mexbungalos is probably talking about the greed of the Mexican car dealers and the monopoly that Carlos Slim leads. I think the fees have dropped but I paid 6000 pesos mas IVA @ 6.0 to the US $ to have my phone installed. Slim is not a entrepreneur in the same league as Warren or Bill! He made his money when the Gov. of Salinas gave him Telmex for almost nothing. However to his credit he turned it into a real winner! His only real failure was the purchase of CompUSA and US Prodigy. Many other Lebanese immigrants became very wealthy. There are not many Mexican business people who could accomplish what Slim did!
