Has GM changed their bed design? I was having a conversation with someone today that said they could not load an 09 Lance in the back of a brand new Chevy 3500 due to the tail gate opening.

I had a hard time believing the story since I have not heard the buzz here on the forum yet.

Does anyone know if this is true?

As far as I know they changed the bed opening in late '07 with the new body style. They rolled the corners where the bed walls meet the floor. I had to modify my camper to fit my '07 Chevy.

Not enough truck campers on the market to influence design for GM

Very annoying when functionality is compromised in the name of styling on what is fundamentally a working vehicle.

I have a 03 3500' and a 2012 3500' the 2012 is a little tighter but I didn't have any trouble loading my 2008 eagle cap 1160. It carries it like a dream, alot better than the 03. If both trucks were here I would measure the difference for you.

We have a 08 Silverado Long Bed and you need to raise many campers by about 2in to clear the lower corners. We had to do that with our old 2001 Lance 915 as well as with the new (2011) Outfitter Apex. The Outfitter is actually still an exceptionally tight fit.

Yes

the bed sides are taller.

on my 2001 gmc 3500 I could put our Lance 1131 right in.
on the 2012 gmc 3500 i had to add a 3/4 inch piece of plywood, the camper sides now sit 1/2 inch above the above the bed rails.

also they made the front of the box thicker/stronger, it will have the camper sitting back an inch more compared to the older model trucks

have fun

....I'm looking at the drawings for both the 2005/2006 8-foot 2500/3500 rear box dimensioning:

-bottom pick-up box opening: 60.6 inches top opening: 60.9 inches

....and now looking at the drawings for the 2011 8-foot 2500/3500 rear box dimensioning:

-bottom pick-up box opening: 62.07 inches top opening: 62.37 inches

By the drawings, it looks like the difference between the 2005/2006 and 2011 HD box rear openings (top & bottom of both the 6'6" & 8' boxes) is significant.

....now, the 2012 box opening for the LIGHT DUTY (1012LD FS C/K 1500 series) 8-foot bed pick-ups (read: not the HD series) is:

-bottom pick-up box opening: UNINDICATED inches top opening: 62.27 inches

*Drawings from GM upfitter body builder manuals; the 2012 drawings appear not to be out yet for the HD GM pick-up dimensioning
