152 RV's leaving Forest City, IA the weekend of 5/11. When we went 2 years ago, there was an active thread here with folks heading out with us. Anyone lurking this year? Less than 2 months! WOOHOO!

ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY TWO!! WOW!! Who is the master for that kind of tour? I hope it turns out to be the most fun you have ever had.

Sure hope you enjoy the trip.

Sounds like the annual motor home rental fleet delivery to Alaska. Best wishes.

Tee jay is right - no tour! 50 units leave each day on their own. In the 18 days we rented last time, we saw one of the units half a dozen times, and 3 other units once each at different locations. It shows how truly spread out you can get between Iowa and Anchorage!

Since these 152 motorhomes are, mostly, going up as replacements in the GAH rental fleet, approx. the same number will be hitting the used market as some time soon. With GAH, ABC and the other rental businesses, doing the same thing each summer, it helps keep the used RV market in Alaska somewhat glutted. The last couple of years I have noticed some of the rental agencies looking for drivers to rent their used units, at a nice discount, to deliver them back to the lower 48 so they can be sold. http://www.greatalaskaholidays.com/contact_us.php I have never done any business with GAH, but they sure get good reviews, as do most all the Alaska and Canadian rental companies.

Several of the rental companies are also dealers, so they buy at dealer costs directly from the factories. If a person wants to buy a used Class C motorhome, it might be worth checking with these companies, then do a fly up and buy, use the RV for a nice Alaska/northern Canada vacation and bring it on home.

We too are taking the GAH Spring Adventure starting on 5/11. We started the process in December and have been planning on and off ever since. We are now officially chomping at the bit to get started.
We are planning on taking I-90 west to Butte,MT, turning right and heading north through Banff, Jasper, Dawson Creek, Whitehorse, and on to Alaska. The ultimate road trip we've wanted to do for several years. This will be our first time driving the Alaska Highway and are looking forward to it. This will be our second trip to Alaska. First time we flew into Anchorage and rented a motorhome from GAH and visited for eight days. Experience with GAH was excellent.

Hi Sharay! "chomping at the bit" is putting it mildly - I am SOOOO ready! Are you taking the bus the night before? As the time gets closer, may be those of us on TA can figure out a way to recognize one another before we get on the bus!

Howdy Again Grandma Carol:

Cheryl & Dennis here! I remember participating in the thread here each year! This is our fourth and last year of taking a GAH unit to Anchorage. We are counting days til we leave and call each other every day at work to tell each other how long til we leave and again each night when we go to bed!!! Next year we are going back to the Four Corners Area. This year we are going up to Minneapolis, Fargo, up to Highway 2 (aka The Highline), across to Harve, MT, cross into Canada at Wildhorse, over to Calgary, Banff, Jasper, and then following everyone up the Alaska Highway! This year are going to take an escorted trip up The Haul Road to Prudhoe Bay to stick our feet in the Arctic Ocean! We leave MSP on Thursday evening on the coach and leave after our orientation on Friday at 11:10am. If this is your first GAH trip and you have any questions, we are happy to share our experiences!

Carol, did we see you the first day we left Forest City at an RV park in Ashby, MN? The last three years my sister was with my husband and I but this year we are taking the trip alone.

More later!!

Cheryl

You sure did Cheryl!!! I remember ya'll had more luggage than anyone else heading to AK! LOL! Will be great to see you again! This time we're headed straight north to the Yellowhead and take that across to the Cassiar - if weather and road conditions don't change our mind. Like you, I had the notion to dip my toe (or maybe little finger) into the Arctic Circle this time - but we're going to fly to Barrow to do that instead of your route. Right now I'm visiting son in Idaho, but headed home tomorrow and suitcases will NOT be put away!

We too are catching the bus at MSP on 5/10, are slated for a 10:35 am orientation on 5/11 and then we will be on our way and looking forward to 18 days of happiness and adventure. EEE-HAAA!!! I will probably wear Cleveland Indians or Browns shirt. Have always found them to be conversation starters/ice-breakers. Because this is our first SA, I am figuring on 8-10 days to reach Tok. Am I in the ballpark? I don't want to spend too much time on stops at places like Badlands, Rushmore, and Yellowstone and cheat ourselves on time in AK. I realize it depends on how much driving time is spent each day, and how many miles we cover each day, but I also want to be realistic with my planning also. Should some of these stops be planned for another trip?
